When troops go to ground from a morale result can a friendly unit shoot over them?

Mark RedLinePS27 Mar 2015 4:08 a.m. PST

I don't know what the rules say, but I can't imagine that would help their morale at all!!

I don't know what the rules say either, but if I were lying face down in the mud, I'd really appreciate my mates in another unit firing overhead in our defence! (Cue stealthy crawl to the rear …)

IIRC artillery can if there is sufficient distance between them and the unit in question. Other infantry regiments cannot.

There was just a thread on artillery overshooting units a week ago. Might be worth a quick search. I believe the consensus was that it's a really bad idea due to stuff falling short. I suspect it's an even worse idea for infantry to overshoot.

GoR,

Units should not shoot over Gone to Ground troops.

Although the unit has "hit the dirt" so to speak, there would still be numerous men, officers and NCO's up on their feet relaying orders, trying to restore order, etc, etc..

And they would probably not appreciate some volunteer militia unit (or anyone else!) firing through/over them!

we assumed as much haha! the situation came up during our first game with Guns at Gettysburg, refighting Tazewell. 3rd Georgia Battalion failed to charge home and went to ground, then resolutely refused to budge for the rest of the game. they effectively blocked the most direct route to reach the Federals, refusing to either advance or clear the way

GOR,

Under the new system you can move fresh units through them – but still not fire over them.
