While the US government managed to restrict reporting about the Japanese balloon bombs appearing over the mainland US in 1944, they did not stop photographers from capturing what they looked like. Above are images, taken by both the Japanese and Americans, of the bombs

It's a sad commentary on war that the only lives they claimed were that of a family (mother and children) out for a picnic. So much for a devastating blow to the U.S. economy.
