I've got some 1/72 Cold War Africa stuff I've been working on for a year or two. I've been thinking about Horse and Musket Imaginations, probably using 25s, but 15s are relatively inexpensive and don't take as much time to paint. Of course, to me, they don't have the visual appeal of the larger scales either. Then I worry about my project growing into hundreds and hundreds of figures, and I don't like to paint …

What scale/s and time periods do you use for your Imaginations armies?

OSchmidt26 Mar 2015 12:31 p.m. PST

Dear 79th PA

Distant ancient- 4 armies, 15mm.

Classical Ancient (Greek City States) 2 armies, 28mm.

Renaissance Wars in Italy, 4 armiesRal Partha 25mm

18th Century 5 Armies 28-33mm.

19th Century Zulu Ral Partha 25mm.

20th Century 20mm, 4 armies.

I do 18th century, with the Kingdom of North Polenburg. I started with 40mm. Then recently I wanted more of a"big battle" look, so began recreating them in 10mm as well.

Dear 79th PA

As the owner of the oldest list on Imagi-Nations (Society of Daisy) one point I want to make. The scale is unimportant.

The important thing is "the hook" or the bit of "crank" or "twist" that gives your Imagi-Nation life. That is, that which makes it interesting. Otherwise you're just painting Prussians and calling them something else. I've talked about this before so I won't bother you again on the whole story, but just to give you an example, my first Imagi-nation Army, that of Princess Trixie of Saxe-Burlap und Schleswig Beerstein, is a burlesque army or satire of Austria and Maria Theresia. The Princess is a flighty, shallow, teenager (16) who'se interested in boys, music, shoes, purses, boy toys, shopping, boys and dances-- and boys. She's a Valley Girl gone to the throne.

The scale and pink coats don't really make up the whole thing, and the armies on the field are generally identical. I did it in 30-33mm because I had a lot of figures in that scale, and I wanted to use large figures so I could do conversions and model making. So if you want to do that sort of stuff you will have to do it in a scale you can model in.

On the other hand, if you want to make the "hook" in other things you can use other scales.

This is critically important because if you don't have a hook or a story or something that's unique, it's just another painting chore. The great fun in Imaginations for me is the units and the burlesque. For example, as a parody of Austria, the Princess Army does not have Pandours and Croats, it has Indians, Northern Woodland Indians, called The Macattack Indians. How they wind up in central Germany in the Seven Years War is a wild and wooly story.

The real thing is to have fun with making up the idea of the army and how it works. A successful Imagi-Nation Army is more than just painting thing in odd colors.

1/72 using Zvezda Great Northern Wars range in soft plastic.

And much as I love to read Otto@s views, the joy of Imagi's is there are many paths to enlightenment. Me, I like teh feedom of colours, even though mine actually aren't too far from "reality". Any background history I have is private jokes at the expense of my brother and his family (the grand despot of the Pancreatic League), but then I not advrse to mocking me and my loved ones either.

So just enjoy, and follow your own path.

And on a final point, I find the necessity for beer based puns rather over-rated. As a result, mine are food based puns instead grin

Use whatever is comfortable and economical for you. I personally use 28mm for my SYW imagi-nation forces as do a number of others who post on the Emperor v Elector blog. But many also use 15mm. I have a friend in Arkansas who uses home cast Prince August semi-round 40mm. They will all work.

Like Colonel Campbell, I would use units based on the rules being played.
For example if I did TSATF then I would play songle mounted 25mm. if I played Induanas Colonel and Emirs (1800s) or Fire and Discipline (1700s), then I would use a 1:15 unit stand of 15mms.

I was doing mine in skirmish scale, using Song of Drums and Shakos. I didn't get past my first warband though.

18th Century, 6mm Baccus, dense packed onto 15mm bases.

I too follow Otto's rants, discourses and considerations on Imaginations and it's true. Do what you want at the scale you want. It's all about the hook and what excites your imagination.

I have Medievals (late 14th century) and mid-19th century Raj troops against a kingdom sort of based on the Sikhs, both in 54mm metals. With gloss finishes, of course!

18th Century 28mm Minden, Crann Tara, and RSM. The first two ranges are expanding at a good clip, and since they utilize the same sculptor, are completely compatible with each other.

Also have some ImagiNations circa 1830 for use with Sharp's Practice. I use Perry's Carlist range.

If you're used to painting 1/72 go with Zvezda or Hat. Relatively cheap and easy to paint. There are some nice metal figures(mostly European) for more special figures or units.

Pauls Bods02 Jun 2015 9:28 a.m. PST

Scale..1/72nd, mainly plastic but a few metals thrown in.
Time period..started in 1731…now itīs 1733
