I've been playing a bit of BattleTech: Alpha Strike lately and decided I wanted to work on a special table for the game. After digging through my pile of BattleTech maps, I decided to try my hand a building a Sink Hole table. While I'm building this primarily for use with BattleTech games, it will work for many of the other games that I play. It will also work for games of various scales; 6mm, 15mm, 28mm. I love versatile terrain. My goal is to get a 4' x 6' table that can be set up in different layouts. My first step was to sketch out the basic layout on some graph paper. This is my basic guide.
After doing some cutting I think I've decided to do two 2' x 2' sections and two 2' x 4' sections, but haven't completely settled on that decision. After cutting up some 1" pink foam boards, I started cutting out shapes according to the sketches. This is the first section I have and I think it looks pretty good.
I will texture this with caulk and then add flock. I thought about a dessert look, but will likely make it match my existing hills so they can be used together.
You can see more pictures and info on my blog. link Let me know what you think or if you have any ideas or thoughts that might be helpful. |

I thought you were going to cover everything, and 'expose' the sinkhole when something heavy stepped on it. Somebody was playing BT at the store, and when one of the fellows sheepishly admitted there was some painting needed done, another player said, 'yeah, who do you think we are, Sean?' ;->= Doug PS Hidden sinkholes: Imagine them in FoW; a fun way to deal with Tigers! |

Ha! Ha! I don't believe you about the comment at the store. These sink holes are a bit bigger than what one vehicle would cause. |

I've made a little more progress on the sink hole table. I've got 4 of the 6 planned boards cut.
Next up is to texture the "walls". I'm using caulk for this and I got the first board finished.
It doesn't look that much now, but once I get some paint on it, I promise it will be better. More pictures and details can be found on my blog. link |

I like. It's the same basic system I'm using to make my tunnel board(s). |

Sort of the most sincere form of compliment, with a bit of malice added. ;->= Sean, did we ever talk about something like this going vertical? Doug |

I don't think we did Doug, but the link Cacique Caribe posted is interesting. I'm not sure what I would use it for, but could see how this would work for that. What were you thinking Doug? |

A lot of painting, dry brushing and flocking happened at my house this weekend. I've finished two boards and am ready to flock the next two.
I ran into a snag with my hot knife and need to get it repaired or replaced. I hope to get the replacement quickly. More pics and details can be found on my blog. link |

Most sinkholes have water at the bottom. You could add a thin removable card floor to represent to water. Different water shades could represent varying depths. Dan |

The original maps were desert sink holes. I made them to match my existing hills so added the green flock. Water in the lower levels is a good idea. Maybe just the bottom most layer. I think blue felt cut to size would work. |

I can just see a mech doing a "Wille E. Coyote" in that sort of terrain. |

What were you thinking Doug? A question I hear all the time, usually echoing in my head… Nothing particular; just wondered if you noticed Dan's ideas. And he DOES have a steady flow, no? You do remember Randy has my styrocutters at his place, right? If you haven't gotten the replacements by now. Doug |

While, I'm not completely finished with this project, I have hit a point that I'm can take a break and work on another project for a bit. I have finished 4 sections and now have a 4' x 4' playable area.
Here you can see all the boards. The great part about these is that they can be rearranged and turned to give a bit of variety to the tabletop. Here you can see the terrain with a few BattleTech models for scale.
I still plan to add (at least) 2 more sections so that I can play on a full 4' x 6'. More pictures can be found on my blog. link |
