I am reading this book on my Kindle. I've read other books about the Crimean War. Early on the Russian offensive in the Danube valley falls back. This has been attributed to the plucky Turks, with little detail in the books I've read. In one book it was credited to a few British officers serving with the Turks, again with precious little detail. The current book says it was because of an ultimatum from the Austrians. Rather than fight yet another power (aside from Turkey, France and Britain) the Czar ordered his troops back. One can see why he thought this was a poor payback for having helped crush the Hungarians in 1848. The book is rather heavy on diplomatic history. That's ok with me. There are rather more typos than usual in a Kindle book, which is not so ok. |
