The United States has delivered 10 armored vehicles to Ukraine as part of a military support program intended to assist the fight against Russian-backed separatist forces in the country's east.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Wednesday at a handover ceremony at Kiev's Borispol airport that more Humvees were to be delivered within 45 days. Poroshenko's office has said the U.S. is set to eventually provide 230 Humvees…

According to a photo caption:

…U.S. aid for Ukraine's army will include 30 heavily armored Humvees and 200 other regular Humvees, as well as small drones, radios, counter-mortar radars and other equipment. All of the aid is nonlethal, and the drones are not armed.

"Heavily Armored." I guess that is a relative term… :)

Damon.

Ah, gone are the days when "armored" meant a vehicle with at least 4" of frontal metal plate.

Given how our Humvees have fared of late, I certainly hope the Russian separatists, and/or Russians don't end up with all of them.

AND, if they do, I hope they remembered to use some basic tech like those car rental companies do, and put tracking devices in them, so they can be quickly found and destroyed from the air, if that becomes necessary.

A shame they didn't do that with the 160 we "lost" in Yemen, just a few weeks ago.

Does Obama think the lend lease with the Russians is still on going from WWII?

Amazing how we keep supplying our enemies or those who oppose us (pc for enemies).

Davoust, reread the article. The Humvees are going to the Ukrainians, not the Russians.

Don't we have piles of MRAPs just sitting around? I say we send those to Ukraine.

GeoffQRF26 Mar 2015 9:58 a.m. PST

Along with the nukes from Germany?

Mako1126 Mar 2015 10:40 a.m. PST

Yes, we said the same thing about those in Yemen, but they lost 160 of them, plus some aircraft and helos, so…….

How does one lose several cargo planes, exactly, in the middle of a desert?

I hope you're wrong about that one, Geoff.

GeoffQRF26 Mar 2015 11:04 a.m. PST

Well Germany allegedly wants them out, and Russia wants them removed, and as Russia has torn up the Budapest Memorandum by annexing Crimea, it seemed a win-win :-)

Delivering 200-300 US nukes to the Ukraine is marginally better than delivering them to Russian cities/military bases…

cwlinsj26 Mar 2015 12:22 p.m. PST

Ukraine may be a friend, but they are not an ally. No way of telling what their govt. will be like a year from now.

I wish them the best, and I wish them success vs. the Russkies, but I wouldnt give them nukes.

GeoffQRF26 Mar 2015 2:50 p.m. PST

…yes, that was firmly tongue in cheek :-)

Wow, humvees! Gee, thanks US!😜
