What major changes are there to justify 7th edition. No I do not want any of the new fangled huge vehicles. |
Pictors Studio | 25 Mar 2015 1:57 p.m. PST |
There are a number of new special rules and there are rules for moving and shooting with heavy weapons. There is also defensive fire when charged. |

People complain that the rules are bad and need tightening up, they make a new rule set, people complain that there is a new rule set, rinse repeat… |
Pictors Studio | 25 Mar 2015 2:50 p.m. PST |
I think that one thing people miss out on about new editions is that there is a certain way that people play that makes them necessary. If it is a tournament game then there are going to be certain combinations that just work better than others. There is no way to fix this, games will always have ways to break them. So the new set of rules not only makes more money for the company that makes them, it also keeps them fresh for these players. It gives them a new puzzle to figure out. |

For how long has GW been doing their thing? Quite a while – actually quite a while longer than most other companies in the same business. They are obviously doing something right, from a business perspective (the 'selling things to earn money' part). As a gamer, I hate that they keep moving the goalposts with the endless codex/new version cycle but the sad truth is that planned obsolescence is what is keeping their games alive. If they were to publish a perfectly balanced, complete game with models available for all the army lists and then never release anything else for that game, it would fade from public view pretty quickly. It would not die completely but it would not earn them enough money to keep producing it. |

They are obviously doing something right, from a business perspective Nah, they did things right in the '80s to early 2000s. Since then they have slowly been bleeding customers. The only reason they haven't gone belly up yet is that they had huge cash reserves from the LotR boom. |
Mithmee | 25 Mar 2015 6:53 p.m. PST |
That and price increases every year. Like taking Eldar Dire Avengers from a box of 10 for $35 USD to a box of 5 for $35. USD So now the unit of 10 will cost you close to $80 USD after taxes. That is how GW is staying solvent. |
Pictors Studio | 25 Mar 2015 7:10 p.m. PST |
"Nah, they did things right in the '80s to early 2000s. Since then they have slowly been bleeding customers." And people have been saying they are going to go away and die due to their pricing, their policies and on and on since I started playing GW games in the mid 90s. It's been 20 years and all of those prophets of doom have been wrong about GW. |
Pictors Studio | 25 Mar 2015 7:18 p.m. PST |
Here is a thread from 2004 where there are a number of predictions of GW's demise: TMP link Here is an editorial from 1999 wherein one person wants GW to "Die. . . die . . . die." TMP link And yet here they are still chugging along. It almost seems like your animosity only makes them stronger. |

At a minimum 7th is a much cleaner, better laid out, easier to read edition than 6th. I say that as a Dad who does not play regularly but every couple of months when junior has a rush of blood and wants to bash some Space Marines around I have to dig it out and run a game. Vastly easier to run through 7th. |

I'm OK with rules updates. It's like getting updates in computer software. Sometimes a necessary evil. I will say that I was highly annoyed at how quick 6th edition passed. especially when the rule books are $80.00 USD. I have not played the 7th edition as I have not been able to justify spending the money on a new rulebook, so my army collects dust.I would pick up the mini rulebook, but even with my glasses the print is too small. |

If you really have to ask, I am not going to respond. …oops, I just did… $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Not a very fun game, IMHO, ever since 3rd edition. spend your money elsewhere on lots of other quality games that are more fun and priced at or lower than GW for similar quality. |

Sorry i will play any 7th edit player using 2nd edit kit,i will win ,we have targetters dedicated sustained fire dice…even negative modifiers to compensate for speed.I dont need flyers or super tanks ,my heavy plasmas ,lascannon and missle launchers will win. Then i have my tanks which are much better because they arent enormous targets and can hide. |

Or get a copy of Blasters & Bulkheads 2nd edition and use any figures you like along with your GW figures. |
Dave Crowell | 23 Apr 2015 1:49 p.m. PST |
Why a 7th edition? Because sales of the 6th edition have slowed. I haven't played since 3rd. And have aged out of their target market demographic anyway. |
Centurio Prime | 24 Apr 2015 10:01 a.m. PST |
7th edition clarified some special rules, and made some big changes in several areas… missions, force org, and psychic powers. You can use superheavies in your games and they are integrated into the force org. I remember when people were wanting titan/superheavy rules back in 2nd, now you can use them, even in a tournament game and its not a big deal. I have had more fun playing 7th than I have in any other edition. And I actually play the game currently… I don't go around pooping on threads for a game I don't play. |
Centurio Prime | 24 Apr 2015 10:04 a.m. PST |
Sorry, meant to state: You can use superheavies in the game or not, its not that big of a deal. |
Mithmee | 25 Apr 2015 1:03 p.m. PST |
Because sales of the 6th edition have slowed. More like it sucked big time. |
XcaliburNick | 27 Apr 2015 11:09 p.m. PST |
Play a few games with it, the big-ticket changes are bringing the psychic phase back, adding the Maelstrom of War mission types and the vehicle damage tables. But I find lots of subtle changes that make this the most fun to wargame with friends I have experienced in 40k for quite some time, To add some mores counterpoint to those who love to complain about a game they clearly haven't played in years: Because it's a chance to revisit old rule decisions, bring new ideas to the table and also clarify and clean up old rule wording? Because it's the best edition of 40k? Because I, like many other players, purchased it in support of a system I enjoy playing as I have done so since 2nd edition? |
Mithmee | 28 Apr 2015 12:16 p.m. PST |
Thing is 2nd Edition was far better. |
Centurio Prime | 29 Apr 2015 5:10 a.m. PST |
I loved 2nd when it was out, but I like 7th much better. Close combat, the psychic phase, and the vehicle rules in 2nd were all bad. The codexes were bad too (granted.. a problem in most editions), allowing cheesy exploits for un-fun armies. We did not use the virus or vortex grenades, though looking back on it, vortex grenades may have solved some issues with overpowered units. 7th actually has some wargear and fluff taken from 2nd edition, which made me happy, but I do not miss playing 2nd edition at all. |
Mithmee | 29 Apr 2015 5:10 p.m. PST |
Well Vortex Grenades did solve the issue of certain Characters. Virus Grenade was pure Evil lost nearly half my Eldar once to it. Thing is I still nearly won that game. |
Centurio Prime | 30 Apr 2015 5:32 a.m. PST |
I played orks in 2nd. Pulsa Rokkits were ridiculous. Ironically orks were best at shooting back then, not at assault. It was fun at the time but I don't miss the gameplay. I'm having lots of fun with 7th now. To answer the OP's original post better…. If you do not want to take a superheavy vehicle/knight titan/etc, dont do it. Bring a drop pod with veterans armed with melta guns, or the equivalent. There are plenty of tactics to deal with superheavy without using one yourself. |
15mm and 28mm Fanatik | 30 Apr 2015 12:00 p.m. PST |
I actually enjoyed 2nd edition. It's not perfect but it really stood out from all the other versions because it was so different. It was a great leap from the small skirmishes of 1st ed. (Rogue Trader). 3rd ed. was much different (and simplified) and 4th, 5th and 6th editions were natural evolutions/developments from 3rd. 2nd edition has a lot of Wargear Cards and Vehicle datafaxes. It also uses different dice for rolling wound and vehicle penetration, like rolling D3 wounds and D6+D10+8 for the krak missile or 3D6+9 for lascannons. Then again, I'm just waxing nostalgic.
