I used to have a chart on how troops react to the death of a general; from going impetuous to laughing….
I think it was for a D20?
Does anyone remember seeing something like this in the past?

Interesting idea! ideally, it should be subject to some combat rating modifier taking into account the established ability of the commander, i.e., a highly rated general like, say, Alexander is not going to be subjected to a snake eyes die roll and be laughed at. But a lesser ranked general (let's pick on Sir John Cope) might well be laughed at but chances of his troops going ballistic are minimal.

I've just looked through my 'archive' copy of OTR and I can't see a table for the 'death of a general'. Therefore it may not be in the original version but perhaps an additional table authored by persons unknown and not in my collection.

It might be covered in the 'new' 'revised' edition available here:

There was on in the back of Yaquinto's Battle and Leaders, good stuff! We used it in Johhny Reb Games

I think the troops would have cheered McDowell or Banks

Rank it by popularity rather than skill. Union troops loved Little Mac. They hated Pope and Buell. Likewise Confederate rank and file hated Bragg yet loved Polk.
