Hola!

I'd just like to draw attention to my new page

It's a bit of a personal project that came about by being hacked off at having to trawl the web for cool female miniatures that weren't overtly sexualised or ridiculous, and then having to spend more on postage than the models in some cases, buying one from here, one from there.

So basically I've been trawling the web, so you don't have to, and handpicking some of the coolest mini women out there so you can get it from one place. I'll start taking all these to shows (UK & Crisis), along with a growing display cabinet. It must already be the biggest place to exclusively get female models [from various manufacturers] and I want it to keep growing.

If you want to see your models here, or have a suggestion, please let me know. I'm trying to avoid the super big companies purely because most places stock them, and I'd like it to be a little emporium of models you might not have seen before (or can't actually get at every LGS)

Cheers
Annie

Angry beavers, Fnarr fnarr chortle, nice one. Seriously, a very good idea.

Cerdic24 Mar 2015 9:46 a.m. PST

Excellent idea!

Legbiter24 Mar 2015 10:13 a.m. PST

Excellent idea! There are some nice females from Foundry also, epochs from Biblical to modern with a peak at 16th-19th century. Sadly, I've never found more than the odd 1 or 2 from any range suitable to be Jane Austen heroines.

Mr Canuck24 Mar 2015 10:23 a.m. PST

Great idea! Good luck with the venture! …thumbs up

Maddaz11124 Mar 2015 10:52 a.m. PST

I would say I like the Idea…

Ermmh, Annie, your female miniatures have clothes on. When did that catch on with figure casters?

Tongue in my cheek. (The above).

Great idea. Honest.

Huscarle24 Mar 2015 1:34 p.m. PST

Crikey, I've got most of those, but I'll keep an eye out to see what other lovelies join their lady's warband thumbs up

A few other suggestions worth looking at – Hinterland Miniatures, Hydra Miniatures, Bronze Age, Ironclad, Mithril, Morland Studios, Perry, RAFM, Studio McVey, Thunderbolt Mountain, West Wind & Rapier Miniatures.

MacrossMartin24 Mar 2015 6:56 p.m. PST

A brilliant idea. Absolutely brilliant.

The only downside is that such a venture is needed in the first place. What a pity that more sculptors, manufacturers and players can't appreciate that women don't need to be kitted out in pseudo-bondage outfits to be worthy of portrayal in miniature! Well, maybe this will convince a few to change their habits.

Can I strongly suggest you also look at Victoria Lamb's Victoria Miniature range?

I wish you the very best of luck!!

Good luck with your venture Annie! :O)

Thanks everyone. MacrossMartin – totally! I'm hoping it will make some cogs turn! One of my bugbears (especially in historical models, fantasy can get away with more on the "rule of cool" ) is the "boob plate armour"

I've been talking to Mr Shandy from The Raft (https://wargamingraft.wordpress.com/) who is very knowledgeable on the subject of women in military history, and has his own female archers (Nujeymah's archers)

he sent me this link, which explains how not only is boob plate armour silly, but also extremely dangerous!

link

But I think when people go to draw/sculpt women in armour, it's an immediate thing to go for that style, as it is everywhere, it is the "norm". So it would be ace if more people read this and thought "you know what, there's a point there, I'd never even thought of that!"

There are models out there (which I am hunting down and already have a few!) with flat plate armour, and they still manage to be super cool models (no way!)

I will be launching my own female miniatures range, starting with some Viking shieldmaidens at SALUTE. I'll be exploring different areas of history after that, and the sky is the limit. So watch this space!

It's bizarre that believable female miniatures are a "niche" where they should [in my opinion] be the norm.

But hey ho, figured I should start putting some positive action in to try and change that.

Cheers!

The best of luck with this.

If you are going to do your own figures, there have been repeated calls for "Pride and Prejudice"/Regency ladies that have gone unheeded so far.

normsmith25 Mar 2015 4:07 p.m. PST

Yep, I think there is a lot of scope here. Good shout Annie

I have a daughter who I've started to play Dungeon and Dragons with. We'll be calling by your stand.

I already have the Otherworld set.

I'll be getting some the others from you.

Bad Squiddo Games31 Mar 2015 5:27 a.m. PST

Excellent, I'll see you there Richard!

Cheers!

I've added more to this with Dragonbait Miniatures and Meirce Minatures. Coming soon are Hasslefree, Westwind, Bombshell, and DGS Games. The budget is pretty stretched so some of those are queued until I sell a few more… hint. Basically the more people buy, the more ranges I get in, and I have some fantastic ones waiting!

The next step for The Dice Bag Lady is to produce a range of historical female miniatures that fit this ethos. The first will be viking shieldmaidens.

Here is the very first of many! A very limited (very!) amount will be at Salute, and available to buy from the webshop a short while afterwards. THREE others of her sisters in arms are currently in various stages of the sculpting process.

Sculpted by Phil Hynes and painted up by Paul Cubbins.

I should keep this updated really! I've been a bit slack with forum-ing lately.

It's still going strong, I'm adding more and more ranges, and still enjoying finding figures here and there. The shows are always packed full of people.

It's allowed me to fund my own range too, which is steadily growing. I moved from resin into metal due to demand.

All my own figures are here link

Shieldmaidens, celts, orcs, and a dabble into fantasy. There is a whole new project soon to be unleashed too.

Cheers!
Annie
