Hi guys, turned to historical for the last 2 decades. It seems to be the latest is now 7th???? edition. I feel in love with the plastic marines from Rogue trader days, I then bought WH40k rules hardcover and went from there. eventually switched to other things. Currently want to get back in but with 15mm troops. What is the main rule diffences since then, what about 6th to 7th any big change? Which edition is better overall and why the changes? |

What's your budget? The rules and codices will set you back at least $80 USD for your 1st army. You'll probably struggle to find proxies for the big toys in 15mm. |

You'll not find instruction for the deodorant land speeder in the book any more. Back then we had no alternatives (and I still love their sculpts--some of the very best artists in the business). Mantic's Warpath and minis is a cheaper way to go. |

Glenn, I'm not even sure they sell Lynx in those bottles any more. I used to have one. |

I game so many periods, I just want to dabble back in Space Marine 40k but in 15mm as I want to spend more on my other gaming habits as well. |

If you just want to dabble, check out "In the Emperor's Name" at: iten-game.org |

Try Third Edition or 4th. It should be cheap on eBay, and was a more streamlined game than Rogue Trader or Second. The current rules are just a vehicle for selling giant, overwrought plastic kits. If you are going to be playing 15mm, why not just use done other rules entirely? There are so many better sets of Sci Fi rules out there. |
GGouveia | 24 Mar 2015 11:06 a.m. PST |
Ivan DBA, I am going back to 40k out of my love of my original Ultramarine vs my World Eaters. I like the look of both and the mythos. |

So best squad level set of 40k rules without all the monster vehicles to make money is considered to be which edition? 3rd? 4th? 6th? 5th? I've been out of the 40k loop for quite awhile. |

I'd you still have the 40k rules you bought, use them. |

No sold them all way back. |

Hi GGouveia, I am on the same oldhammer kick and while I love RT I am using a mix of 3rd, 4th and 5th editions to play both skirmish and up to 1750 point battles using some GW minis and lots from other manufacturers in any way I want. So just go for it and good luck |

Lots of good comments here. As to the part of your question about the differences between 6th & 7th Edition I would suggest its in refinement and accessibility of the rules. I can't think of any major changes but 7th is an easier read, clearer, better layout of rules and smoother integration of flyers, lords of war and other recent developments. Just a better all round package than 6th. |

What's your budget? The rules and codices will set you back at least $80 USD USD for your 1st army Actually this would be much more than $80 USD since the Codex is around $55. USD Then there are the prices of the current crop of Miniatures. Average price for a single miniature ranges from $4 USD-$7 dollars and for certian ones they are over $12 USD per miniature. Plus the current set of rules are badly written and not that good. |

I think 3.5 is probably the best. I really liked 3 and 3.5 cleaned a lot of the stuff up. "Average price for a single miniature ranges from $4 USD USD-$7 dollars and for certian ones they are over $12 USD USD per miniature." Actually the miniatures are only about $.75 USD each. Cheaper if you buy more at a time. |

Really just which miniatures? Oh I know that when I brought mine they were around that cost. But that was around 24 years ago. Plus they were all metal. But today GW does not have one miniature that costs $.75 USD. |

Ebay is a great source of 40k miniatures at a reasonable price. Play with any version of 40k you like. Rogue Trader is good;just add house rules to your tastes. |

George, Don't get me wrong, I'm still a fan of the 40k universe, too, and as it happens I am also (very slowly and sporadically) building 40k forces in 15mm. Right now I have a Genestealer cult, and some 15mm Marines painted. But on the rare occasions they hit the table, I use Critical Mass Games rules or Alien Squad Leader, both of which are light years ahead of any version of 40k, in my humble opinion. Another good alternative is Future War Commander. |

Stay with 2nd edition, best rules .Tanks are tanks, hits in spot s not hull points. |

"Really just which miniatures?" Pretty much all the ones he wants to use for his game. These are all metal. "Oh I know that when I brought mine they were around that cost." From where did you bring them? |
ordinarybass | 25 Mar 2015 8:04 a.m. PST |
I think some messages may be getting confused here: You're not going to find $0.75 USD GW miniatures new these days and certainly not metal figures. you may be able to work out used deals for that price, but it's not the norm. $3 USD-7 or higher is the norm now. |
Pictors Studio | 25 Mar 2015 9:38 a.m. PST |
But what does that have to do with anything? Why even bring it up? It is irrelevant to the topic at hand. GGouveia is going to be able to get the figures he wants for about $.75 USD-$1 each. Depending on which edition he buys the rules will cost him anywhere from $5 USD-85 and the codexes about $5 USD-50 each. The figures will only be less than $1 USD each typically. |

Everyone has clearly forgotten that he's asking about the rules and not the models-- OP is using 15mm SF, which sell for well under a dollar a model usually. |
ordinarybass | 25 Mar 2015 10:12 a.m. PST |
Sorry, I thought the$ 0.75 was referring to mithmee's comment, not the OP's request. As to the OP's plan, 15mm 40k isn't a bad idea. Since you won't be playing against current 40k players, I'd recommend going with 6th edition. The mini rulebook will run you 5-10 bucks and 5th and 6th edition codices are usually $10 USD each or less. On the other hand, if you're doing 15mm and going for bigger battles (squads but without the big stuff) you'd probably find 3rd or 4th edition to be the most streamlined. 3rd edition even includes a bunch of army lists in the back of the book, though it was the last edition to do so. Lastly, visit proxie models to see some grimdark tanks in 15mm in plastic. Best of luck whatever you decide. |
RTJEBADIA | 25 Mar 2015 12:30 p.m. PST |
I concur, though for my own uses RT and the most recent editions are a bit better, 3rd is actually very solid fun and *very* streamlined. The army lists in the back of the book are passable for that scale, too. |
Shadowcat20 | 05 May 2015 11:16 p.m. PST |
Still prefer 2nd ed…with wargear, templates, grenades, and strat cards. My nid army rocked and tore apart vehicles with their claws and squats ruled. |
Capt Flash | 08 May 2015 3:56 a.m. PST |
I'd also support using 3rd edition if you're thinking of larger games. 6th edition is great since you obviously aren't looking to min-max your lists. But I feel that the terrain rules serve 28mm a little better and for 15s I'd certainly stick to 3rd. Plus you can find the Vehicle Design Rules and builder online as well. |
