Hi guys, what would be the best space marine 40k sub ins by company? Which figs are the closest match overall? I am not into conversions, just want something as close as possible to paint. |
GypsyComet | 23 Mar 2015 5:22 p.m. PST |
Thematically, the Ion Age Crusader Knights are quite close even though they lack many of the later fancy toys |
Weasel | 23 Mar 2015 5:47 p.m. PST |
Laserburn imperial troops can also work pretty well. I've certainly used them in the role before :) |

Pictors Studio | 23 Mar 2015 6:53 p.m. PST |
I would use Ion Age as well. |
wminsing | 23 Mar 2015 6:57 p.m. PST |
Ditto on the Ion Age suggestion; they aren't 'perfect', though they capture the Rouge Trader era feel fairly well. They also have enough variety to cover most of the major troop types. -Will |

GGouveia | 23 Mar 2015 7:30 p.m. PST |
Bingo. Check these our for 40k marines and terminators. Perfect or as close as one can get. Slight addition to backpack and voila. Khurasanminiatures.tripod.com sci Fi |
KJdidit | 23 Mar 2015 7:38 p.m. PST |
If you want to add Rhinos, Razorbacks, or Vindicators, might I suggest these: link And I'm using these for Predators: link |
Pictors Studio | 23 Mar 2015 9:05 p.m. PST |
Here are some of the Ion Age figs. Perfect as Terminators: link
And a space marine squad:
there are bikes: link and lighter armoured troops that could be used as scouts as well. They even have some cool stuff to use as dreadnoughts. link The range really has all you'd need for the infantry and has a very "space knight" feel that GW Space Marine armies project. But yeah, for the vehicles I'd also go with Rebel Minis. |
GGouveia | 23 Mar 2015 9:30 p.m. PST |
Thanks guys that's awesome. |
AdmiralCrackbar | 24 Mar 2015 8:04 a.m. PST |
I gotta say I've always loved the Ion Age stuff, except for the helmets on those troops. The rest of the miniature is awesome, but those helmets are just ridiculous. |
GGouveia | 24 Mar 2015 8:11 a.m. PST |
I am starting to admire those Ion Age for Space Marines, obviously best choice for Sisters of Battle. I do like the Khurasan set as well, decisions decisions, does anyone here have both and a side by side pic? I think ther Khurasan seem to fit better for more recent Space Marine armour, alter the backpacks, Ion Age are very close to as mentioned Early Space Marine Rogue Trader. What about space orks? Does anyone do something similar in 15mm? Eldar seem to be covered by uk15 IIRC. Chaos Space Marines could be a combo of others lines like Alternative Armies etc. |
GypsyComet | 24 Mar 2015 8:36 a.m. PST |
"but those helmets are just ridiculous." In the context of 40k, "ridiculous" has a pretty high threshold. "What about space orks?" The Ion Age line has the Malig for grots, and the "Alien Mercenaries" from GZG make fine post-Clan Boyz. "Chaos Space Marines" These are so distinctively GW that the 15mm makers who avoid the Gothic look (which is most of them) have not really arrived at a good analog. The Ion Age Nox troops are about as close as I've seen. |
Buff Orpington | 24 Mar 2015 8:43 a.m. PST |
If you want to use the latest edition I recommend looking at what GW sell now and see if there are any reasonable proxies in 15mm. I think you'll struggle to find a Stormraven proxy and I haven't seen a Space Marine army without at least one for ages. Edit: OK, the Shapeways one in the blog referred to above would do but it isn't that great and cost $31. USD |

Buff Orpington | 24 Mar 2015 8:56 a.m. PST |
Maybe but it looks a bit light compared to link |
GypsyComet | 24 Mar 2015 9:09 a.m. PST |
I see two obvious weapon systems instead of three, but since the Drizzlechicken is a boxy attack copter with a turret in place of the rotors, you may need to do some converting to meet it. |
Buff Orpington | 24 Mar 2015 9:19 a.m. PST |
Indeed Sci Fi, especially Grimdark Sci Fi is about suspension on belief and the GZG one requires less effort to believe in. Drizzlechicken :) |
Logain | 24 Mar 2015 9:19 a.m. PST |
I've seen several people use GZG's alien mercs as Orcs- a good match for Boyz. Blue moon manufacturing has some good proxies for Eldar too (Universalists, Terran), also one for Tyranids (Vleta), and another option for Space Marines (Orion). Darkest Star has some that are decent for Chaos Marines (Star Marauders) |
kenohhkc | 24 Mar 2015 10:57 a.m. PST |
Logain listed my suggestions. I am Using Khurusan for my Marines, Chaos(Marines with Green Stuff and head swaps, cultists) and Squats, Blue Moon for my Eldar, GZG for my Orcs, and hoping for Onslaught to help with Chaos, Dark Elves, Sisters, and please oh please Tyranids and Tau. You could do the Guard out of almost anybody. |
KJdidit | 24 Mar 2015 12:02 p.m. PST |
For Guard, I'd use Flytrap Factory's Penal Force troops; they fit well as Cadians. Proxie Models has the Leman Russ covered, and Khurasan's MDMS Cane Toad APC fits the Chimera aesthetic pretty well. |
Earl of the North | 24 Mar 2015 12:13 p.m. PST |
The scene link wasteland warriors used to be orks but got a head change, they still look pretty good as orks IMHO. |
BlackWidowPilot | 24 Mar 2015 1:08 p.m. PST |
Eldar? Old Glory/Blue Moon's Universalist Command are perfect Eldar proxies IMHO:

Hope this helps!

Those Blue Moon look good. |
Weasel | 24 Mar 2015 1:24 p.m. PST |
Yeah, those are perfect for Rogue Trader era eldar. As has been said, for Guard, most any figures will do. Vietnam Americans (I like Peter Pig) or Eureka modern Australians are my faves. |
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:08 p.m. PST |
Khurasan post apoc mutants can be used for large Orks as well, heres some I have converted, also for Nids, use Khurasans space demons range.
these are some of the GZG mercenaries only slightly converted.
and here is some of Khurasans space Rhinos converted to heavy orks
|
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:11 p.m. PST |
Khurasan also has these that could proxy for Nids, I will be converting the space demon range myself, but might add some of these in as well, I've only done 1 so far, and only as decoration for the Blood Angels Sgt base, so I didn't put a lot of work into him, the proper one will end up with 4 arms.
|
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:22 p.m. PST |
Here are Ion ages females and some Trencher 2114 space germans converted to Sisters, the only thing I changed on the Ion age figs was the back pack, sleeves and tabbard, so they can be painted up unconverted to look good as sisters.
|
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:37 p.m. PST |
For Chaos Space marines, I used 15mm.co.uk star vikings and wusug raiders, I converted them to death guard, but any suitable paint job for your choice.
|
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:42 p.m. PST |
Tua I used CMG Ygs, again, just paint them as Tua without the conversions would work.
|
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:48 p.m. PST |
For Space marines, I used Mad Robots jump troops for scouts, Khurasan for Marines, and GZG 25mm NSL power armour for terminators.
|
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 3:52 p.m. PST |
For IG, you can use nearly anything, WWI Germans or French are goof for Death Korp, even without the conversions, I plan on doing Praetorians as well.
|
GGouveia | 24 Mar 2015 9:21 p.m. PST |
Gunner my friend, your work is simply outstanding and second to none. Brilliant work. |
Gunner Dunbar | 24 Mar 2015 11:41 p.m. PST |
thanks, you can use all these ranges with the conversion. |
Pictors Studio | 24 Mar 2015 11:50 p.m. PST |
Another option for Tyranids is the 10mm line from Penndraken. |
Gunner Dunbar | 25 Mar 2015 2:32 a.m. PST |
I meant without the conversions. |
TheBeast | 25 Mar 2015 5:26 a.m. PST |
Has there been similar posts in the past? I've seen a few specific, but this is a brilliant survey! Obviously, you've all been doing a lot of thinking on the topic. Allow me to I add my admiration, Gunner! In the context of 40k, "ridiculous" has a pretty high threshold. Drizzlechicken :) AND so much fun; I shall try to work that in at the store, GypsyComet! Passing thought: as the whole design system for Imperial vehicles starts with simple shapes, something like 'a boxy attack copter with a turret in place of the rotors' seems a prime candidate for a scratchbuild. I'd be daunted by any Tau, save a Star Wars droid tank conversion, but… Heck, even the Stormravens from Land Raiders with a couple of wings look surprisingly good. Doug |
Jimboba | 25 Mar 2015 6:03 a.m. PST |
Gunner Dunbar – ditto all the kudos. Inventive stuff. I also agree that 40k is pretty 'ridiculous' and would personally intentionally avoid trying to replicate that world in 15mm. Having said that, Gunnner's work is inspiring and I've a tendency to slip in to the 'ridiculous' myself – only last week I forked out for more 15mm space orks on eBay plus a 40k Battlewagon to convert into a 15mm ork behemoth! Like these: now OOP for legal reasons I believe… link |

Im going WWI and WWII French for my Death Corp of Krieg… |

And the NVL from Picoarmor makes decent Cadian stand ins and have a huge variety of sculpts as well.
Need a Leman Russ ?

For Tau vehicles, couldn't some of the 40K Tau drones work or are they too small? |
Gunner Dunbar | 25 Mar 2015 3:59 p.m. PST |
As far as Tau Vehicles go, I have played around with the idea, but haven't got into they yet, here is what I have so far. Drop ship, nothing actually done to it yet, it was a model bought of eBay
Crisis suits, converted CMGS Ayame battle suits.
Devilfish, made from a GW piranha
I've also played around with kroot, converted Khurasan figs.

GGouveia | 25 Mar 2015 6:14 p.m. PST |
Gunner Dunbar my Aussie friend, if games workshop had more brains they would hire you to sculpt their 15mm section of 4 ok. However the price for a squad of 15mm would be 15 bucks per 10 easily. |
GGouveia | 25 Mar 2015 8:01 p.m. PST |
Btw Gunner any idea for 15mm space marine assault jump pack troops? Conversion only? |
GypsyComet | 25 Mar 2015 10:42 p.m. PST |
Probably. It is a trope that is under-represented in 15mm SF in any style. |
KJdidit | 25 Mar 2015 11:19 p.m. PST |
Javelin98 has a Shapeways shop that provides some 15mm infantry accessories, including jump packs: link |
Gunner Dunbar | 26 Mar 2015 3:18 a.m. PST |
Yeah, jump packs would need converting, either by adding the shapeways ones mentioned above, or gluing 2 plastic rods to the back of a fig your using as a jump marine. Something similar to this, you wouldn't need to add all the other detail, maybe just a ball of GS, whilst unset, add a little super glue, and push the plastic rod in at the desired angel, pretty easy conversion, I have a jump squad half made, been unfinished for a while now, should get onto those.
