I am looking into getting into the Age of Arthur. I have a box of Gripping Beast Plastic Saxon Thegns. Will they work for the Age of Arthur or are they only suitable for a later time period??

Pictors Studio23 Mar 2015 12:31 p.m. PST

They are more for a later time period.

The Old Glory line has dedicated Saxons for the period if you are looking for inexpensive figures.

West Wing has a range of them too. I think they are about as good as the Old Glory ones.

SBminisguy23 Mar 2015 12:51 p.m. PST

They look like they could actually serve as Romano-Brits, but not Saxons of the Arthurian period.

Well, darn. I already had the plastic box.

Curteys Miniatures produce an expanding range of Early Saxon and Romano British, eventually the range range will include Picts , Hibernians and Welsh too.

Footsore miniatures, the original Musketeer Miniatures with some of the Gripping Beast Arthurian Saxons should provide all you need, good luck. Just starting out in this period myself

Does anyone know how all these lines compare to each other?

GB w/ a Foundry Musician. Plenty to choose from, but I still think GB do the best Age of Arthur. Old Glory are unusable crap, West Wind ok, but don't buy the armoured guys, real crap sculpts.

Thank you Cerdic!

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like most of the manufacturers' figures will work together on the table.

the plastic thanes are more for later period.

however the plastic generic DA warriors would fit the bill.

ACW Gamer24 Mar 2015 6:34 p.m. PST

Thank's Stewart. I might get those too.
I didn't see any comments on Black Tree Designs…will they work?

WillieB25 Mar 2015 3:14 a.m. PST

The Black Tree Saxons fit in perfectly with Gripping Beast, Musketeer and Westwind. The latter however do have a few casting problems sometimes.
