Hello, I am planning on doing a project pertaining to the strategy and tactics of the Battle of Lake Okeechobee, 1837. Can any recommend any sources or suggestions? Thank you |

Are you in Florida? If so, a visit to the Dade Massacre battlefield would be a good starting point. It have a good gift shop with a number of books. Kimball, a Florida Park Ranger has a good booklet on the Timelines of our Wars with the Muskogee Creeks and Seminoles. It used to be on-line. |

Go to the Seminole Wars Foundation website. They have a section on books and booklets they sell that are on various aspects of the war(s). seminolewars.us/home.html |

John Mahon's History of the Second Seminole War 1835-1842 is the best modern history. I recommend starting there. Mahon covers tactics, strategy, weapons and weapons effectiveness in detail. After that I recommend Col. William Foster's This Miserable Pride of a Soldier, which is obtainable form the Seminole Wars Foundation. Foster commanded the 4th infantry during the war and developed many of the standard army tactics for fighting the Seminoles, like maneuvering and firing at the Seminoles when ambushed. Rick |

Being in New York, you might try getting books through the local library exchange program. I live in a small town in Alabama and that is how I get a lot of my research material from distant areas. |
