Between my Biblical armies and my American Indian collection, I paint large numbers of bare-chested male figures, in both 15mm and 25mm scale. I'm not a super-detailed painter. I paint eyeballs and pupils in 25mm, eye shadows in 15mm, facial hair in both scales. No tattoos or scars or body hair.

I find nothing sets off that blank wall of male chest like a pair of well-defined nipples. It's easy, just a couple dabs of brown, bing-bing, you're done. I realize the color isn't strictly accurate for all complexion types, but I'm going for definition. I do some variation in size and placement, so everyone isn't exactly the same.

I don't do navels.

If I were to start working down a scale, on 10mm figures, I suppose I'd have to give up on detailing nipples. If I were to move up to 40mm, I might have to add navels, and maybe pit hair.

What's your experience in this realm? What's your favorite color? I usually use Apple Barrel Spice Brown, but I'll go down a shade if the subject is very dark complected.

Not if pasties are available, no.

On male figures, it depends on the sculpt. Much like lips.

On female figures, since I collect a lot of Amazons, almost always, like lips.

As far as color, I usually use the skin color I used for shadows. Sometimes, depending on hair & skin tone I may use a contrasting color. If I had to pick a single color it would be one from the Reaper Redstone triad depending on the skin tone.

they show up in the ink wash.

Only if she asks me:)
Seriously though if they are caucasian types (Greek light infantry for example) I do a slight shade darker on lower pectoral muscle otherwise as it is not really a strong defining feature on a miniature except of course in the case of female figures where it is a feature:) then yes.

Be careful, they crack if varnished.

I did on one of my Viking berserkers the other week for the first time ever. Since I've done plenty of other Vikings and a bunch of Celts, always do eyes, and sometimes do lips, I don't know why I never did this in the past. I suppose the fact that they aren't sculpted on the male figures I've bought has something to do with it.

I think I used Delta Ceramcoat Cayenne.

This topic gave me a flashback to a scene in the 1981 "Pennies from Heaven" film with Steve Martin & Jessica Harper.

Lips first, then nipples. I can see where this is going.

Yes … but usually only a dot …

picture

(referring to the bare-chested guy, of course wink)

Those are 15s of course (same goes for larger figures though by 54mm, a brown dot looks better than a black dot).

Yes, I have a bottle of Nipple Pink from Armory that I bought back in '82 that I'm trying to use up.

Zephyr122 Mar 2015 2:20 p.m. PST

From what I've heard, it's usually best to warm up the paint first…

StarfuryXL522 Mar 2015 8:29 p.m. PST

I find that keeping the temperature low in the painting room makes it easier to paint the nipples.

HistoryPhD23 Mar 2015 3:52 p.m. PST

Remember that 1%-6% of humans have a supernumerary (third) nipple!

Only if they are on the end of a baby's bottle.

nazrat25 Mar 2015 7:15 a.m. PST

Of course. Why wouldn't one paint them?
