From the Napoleon-Series : link The poster seemed to think that making skin-belts was somehow an invention of the Americans in the early 1800's. The following article puts scalping and other trophy-taking on the Americna frontier (into the early 1800's) into some context, indicating not only the generalized nature of this practise in the North America by Natives and Europeans of all allegiances, but also describing several parallels in contemporary Europe. Ghastly topic, but maybe interesting : link The writing is a little bit "academic", and includes what I suppose is now a requirement in "scholarly" articles: one mention of "class difference" or "class struggle". But only one mention that I found. What is really interesting to me is that contemporary notions of race and ethnicity were not at all what they became in the Victorian era. There was some scientific question of whether race was a permanent characteristic of a person. - Sasha |

There is an account of an AWI Rebel officer having the lower half of a dead Indian skinned by his men in order to make a pair of leggings. |
