Evening All,

A box to table post this day on some 1st Corps 28mm Carthaginians from my 2015 Punic Wars project. Bit slow off the mark with stuff this year, hopefully of use for some.

Point for debate based on the figures, when does a javelin become a spear ?

I read somewhere that Cartheginian spears are noted as been shorter than Greek spears hence shorter than your average spear.

Very nice job on those by the way.

It's a good question. I go for: A javelin is a light spear that can't be used braced Vs cavalry or get other 'heavy weapon' bonuses.

With love from sunny Ilkley.

Very nice figures!

when does a javelin become a spear?

You throw a javelin. You don't throw a spear.

mashrewba20 Mar 2015 10:57 a.m. PST

Unless it's a throwing spear…

Wasn't it Michael Caine who said (cue mockney accent)

"Stop throwing those bloody spears at me"

I know he didn't but it makes me laugh.

"I want Charlie Croker given a good going over…"

Lovely figs by the way -I like the bases -how wide are they?

Ken. Enjoyed the tutorial and well done on the unit. Hannibal is going to be my priority for 2015/16 – I do admire your unit a month goal!

By the way, Duncan Head wrote a piece in Slingshot in 2004 casting doubt on his earlier view on 'shorter' Carthaginian spear – basically we do not know if they used a long thrusting spear or shorter throwing spear!

Have just purchased the new Victrix boxes – the new LBMS transfers look great and I will be keen to see what they have in mind for their Libyans. The Agema figures I have will have to be in separate units.

Figures will be based for Hail Caesar – so 40mm square for 4 close order figures – with a 20mm strip to the front of movement trays to protect fragile plastic spears.

Will watch your progress with interest.

Ken,

do you have an end goal, and if so what's the size? Keep to it whatever it is – don't expand.

I planned a 'small' Punic Wars project, and because Renegade did half price plus one free unit per four units ordered I ended up with this: 2100 figs God help me

Far, far more than is useful.

Beware, don't over do it.

I hope the Earths crust is sufficiently thick under that collection.

My Hero, really really cool.

Hi everyone, thanks for the kind comments above,

mashrewba, bases are 60mm square

James, don't worry mistakes will be made, I recall the Renegade offer you mention very well, I used it to do the English Civil War in 1 to 1 scale ! A box of Perrys Desert Rats and a couple of vehicles for a skirmish game has gone the same way etc etc etc.

BTW you've got space for at least one cavalry unit behind the yellow legion :-)
