Thanks to the enthusiasm and inspiration of Konstantinos Travlos, I've been looking at the battle (or strictly, the three battles) of Velestino, from the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. This pits the determined leadership of Colonel Smolenski against the dashing courage (or rash insanity) of Suleiman Pasha and his cavalry. The initial actions were really a reconnaissance in force, after which there was a four-day respite before the main assault. Wargame-wise, this presents a nice opportunity to try to represent a reconnaissance in force. Konstantinos's BBB scenario gives a fascinating game that embraces both the reconnaissance and the full assault. It is a small battle: half a dozen units a side, on a 4'x4' table, playable in under 2 hours. If you don't play BBB, it could readily be adapted for use with other rulesets.
