the grey I think was the shade more for the Volunteers of West Legion in 1870 former French Pontifical Zouaves
if not it was more blue-grey

I have seen conflicting images. Others show grey uniform, other blue-grey.

I'm sure I've seen a picture of these chaps all wrapped up in cold weather gear including their own design of duffel coat. It was a bit parky by the time they showed up to the FPW.

I see. I am mostly interested in what they would be wearing in Papal Service.

fill in google-pictures: "pauselijke zouaven" (dutch for papal zouaves)
There were dutch volunteers fighting fo the pope in this period

According to Osprey MAA 237 French Army of the Franco-Prussian War 2, Republican Troops, the Volunteers of the West (Ex-Pontifical Zouaves) wore light blue uniforms (with officers uniforms a lighter shade of blue)in Italy but when in France the other ranks were issued with grey uniforms of inferior quality.

Aha. Well I went for a grey-light blue mix :p

Thanks for all the answers!

Interestingly the officers seem to have worn the same sort of uniform as the men rather than the longer coats worn by the French and (Ithink!!) American zouave officers.

Not having my sources at hand, I recall reading both grey and grey blue. I also read that officers wore grey/blue and regulars wore grey. I painted mine ( for Italian service ) in blue gray: link
