Peter Pig has just started play testing the coming version of ROF. It will be on a 4 x3 foot table using the PP 6" grid system.
This is just an update in case you are considering a set of rules like this in September?

thanks

Thanks for the early heads up, that size of table (and the Grid) would interest me very much.

Must admit I'm not overly enamoured of grids, so I'll probably stick to the existing Regiment Of Foote, which is first rate. :-)

I like the rules as they are now, very much! Never used the recommended table size though. I hope you're not tinkering too much Martin!

The original ones will still be available as a pdf. The new ones are very different though!

Who is "nartin"?

arthur181518 Mar 2015 3:27 p.m. PST

In what ways will the new rules be 'very different'? Will the original campaign system remain, or will that be changed too?
I like the original RoF, but I've been converted to grids/hexes of late, so will be very interested to see the new incarnation.

nazrat18 Mar 2015 3:43 p.m. PST

I think I'll stick with the set I have.

Sorry, Martin, I love your figures but I hate gridded tables. Hopefully you can steer clear of grids when you start reworking the Spanish Civil War rules.

The new ROF
4x3 table in 6" grids.
Square has capacity of 3 units.
Typical army 10 regiments of foot, 10 regiment of cav. Units size is 3bases for foot and 2 bases for fav.
New pre-game.
Game lasts 2 hours.
Different to old st but going down very well with play testers at the memento.

Thanks for that very helpful reply, Martin.
I'll be watching for their release!

I'm not a fan of gridded games either, but I do like PP's ECW figures which look great on the table, particularly when painted by Fat Wally. grin

Will there be any new releases to go along with the second edition rule set?

Fat Wally20 Mar 2015 12:09 a.m. PST

Oooh. Thank'ee kindly sir.

Supercilius Maximus20 Mar 2015 5:23 a.m. PST

Will you be showcasing it at Salute?

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP20 Mar 2015 12:49 p.m. PST

ROF is not ready for salute. we will be bringing PBI as a gamette participation.
There should be some Irish soon for Montrose's army first (Kev's idea).
We are just play testing at the moment. Most time is being spent on the LW WW1 French.

YAY! for gridded table top battlefields!

Thanks

That's a tad irritiating
Just finished the Pike & Shot society display game for the old rules
Will the unit sizes / force compositon / points cost change as such?
Just trying to get a feel if the old figures / basing / unit sizes will transfer across to the new game or if I'll need to build a whole new game?

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Apr 2015 2:44 p.m. PST

Old armies are fine. each unit will now make two! Thus 4 cavalry bases that used to be one unit now make two units each of 2 bases

I like the sound of this what size are the squares?
I'm sure will it scale up for 28mm.

YoursInaWhiteWineSauce06 Apr 2015 1:24 p.m. PST

I haven't any experience with gridded games but am always willing to give something new a try.

Sounds like this may be a neat alternative for using massed 6mm troops too.
Assuming I get them all painted that is!

cheers

The squares are 6". Giving 4x3 foot table. I am not sure about 25mm but maybe we should be along the lines of 9". But using 7" base square to geta 6x 4 size??

martin

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Apr 2015 2:32 a.m. PST

6mm. he squares must still be big enough to make the movement look significant. How about 4" squares. Giving 32" by 24"??

Play testing continues apace on ROF. For the naysayers, it maybe worth giving them a go before dismissing. The battles look great on the table. The grid isn't obtrusive at all and does make for a quick game with no fussing over half an inch of movement.

Expect historical scenarios too.

Eagerly awaiting the new ROF – any idea of possible release date?

Riddcowler5804 Sep 2015 5:54 a.m. PST

I'm certainly interested in these. Perhaps I'll have chance to have a chat at Colours?

cazador14 Sep 2015 7:58 a.m. PST

Looking forward to seeing these!
Sean, have sent mail to your home email address re discussion at Salute.
