Hmmm… '…things that drive men haven't.' There were no states in Australia before Federation – only colonies; pretty basic stuff, really. The majority of bushranging activity in the period in question occurred in settled districts, because that's where the pickings were generally richest. Goldfields also suffered the depredations of 'road agents', and many of the later ones were on the frontier – even beyond the frontier – but most of the thieving took place on or on the way to the diggings. But of course none of this matters because DMH Down Under is based on a handful of bushranger movies rather than history. Curiosity will probably drive me to have a squiz* at this anyway once it turns up down under. *Traditional Australianism: look, peek, gander. |

It's a shame a greater effort wasn't made to capture the spirit of the place and time. Expressions such as 'dude' and 'guys' seem a little out of place. |

I see that casting for 'The Legend of Ben Hall' has just wound up, and the producers have put out an appeal for percussion weapons paraphernalia. This suggests that they're seriously behind schedule; I very much doubt they'll meet the original release date of May, intended to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Hall's death. Anyway, when the film does finally appear on the big (or small) screen, it will increase the pool of DMH Down Under potential source material by a hefty percentage. |
