Hello,
Sorry for the daft question.

I was wondering if the Prussian guard battalions would have sported moustaches?
Cheers
Paul

If I am remembering correctly, no. Only Grenadiers were allowed mustaches, and the Garde zu Fuss regiments lacked grenadier companies. In 1815, the line grenadier battalions were formed into the Grenadiergarde regiments, but not before that.

Oh, and the Garde Hussar Eskadron would have had them as well.

This, of course was per regulations. In the field, who knows?

Thanks very much rmaker

I see plenty mousetaches on contemporary prints – I always was under the impression that the Garde Regiment zu Fuß had Grenadier status, the Garde Füsilier Bataillon also did wear mousetaches.

Oliver Schmidt would be the man to ask.

Richard Knoetel seems to think they did:

Thanks for the further help, moustaches it is.

Grenadiers and the Garde zu Fuss (with Grenadier status) had moustaches. It should also be noted that the Prussians did not care what the person looked like as long as he had two legs and two arms. Remember the campaign hardships.

Wolf und Jügel show all troops, on foot and on horseback, line and guards, with moustache, except the Garde-Jäger-Bataillon and Normal-Infanterie-Bataillon in ca. 1812, and the Garde-Schützen-Bataillon in ca. 1816.

v. Winterfeldt and Summerfield: I don't know what you mean with "grenadier status" ?

von Winterfeldt18 Mar 2015 3:16 p.m. PST

a bad expression, guards had no grenadier companies – or no need to have

Again thanks for all the help!

I do like a neatly-trimmed busch.

Hey Paul – They're smart looking units :)

Moustaches were mandatory: also for their wives & children:
