Need a set of Mass Fantasy battle rules that allow players to point out any type of army that they want. So if you want to use your huge force of GW dwarves versus my huge army of romanized gorillas it can be done. |

Agree with Major B – its Fantasy; you can do what you like as long as you aren't planning to traipse down to you local GW store and play against the teenagers… |

The big issue is whether the rules either have an explicit points system to build your army, which Armies of Arcana does (for example), or whether the rules allow you to have flexible "count as" with modifications. Most systems could handle the latter, but it does require much more work in some cases. |

It does not have a unit creation mechanic, but Kings of War has quite open allies rules and 12 well-done army lists. Between the 12 army lists there are statlines to well-represent just about any fantasy unit you can think of. Also all the rules and army lists are free: link I've been meaning to try AofA for some time, but KoW's fast and easy play has my heart for now. |

Armies of Arcana is your best choice, if you want complete freedom to build your armies. Believe me, I have lots of mass battle fantasy rules. |

For individually based, I would go with Armies of Arcana as others have suggested. It's not a huge leap of learning from Warhammer |

It's not a huge leap of learning from Warhammer Suppose you played Warhammer before, but didn't care for it? Would Armies of Arcana still be a good choice? |

My experience playing Armies of Arcana is that shooty armies are almost impossible to beat unless they face another shooty army, roll incredibly poor dice, or have someone who has never wargamed before commanding them. It was disappointing because we really wanted these rules to be "the answer". |

Armies of Arcana is good but seems to have peaked some time ago while it was still in Thane's hands. It is a great set of rules for tinkering. The new owners of the rules don't seem to be marketing AoA very extensively. Undeservedly, AoA seems to have mostly dropped down the memory hole. I suggest you look at Kings of War. There are specific armies, but the company which produced KoW doesn't care what you use for models. You won't have IP gestapo kicking in your door if you use your gorillas as trolls or whatever. Here is a link. link There are also youtube videos about the game to give you an overview. In a nutshell, it is similar to WHFB but stripped down to a more efficient turn sequence and outcome generation, with MUCH more freedom in how to represent your army. And… the wind is in their sails. KoW is active and spreading. IF you are just playing for yourself or within a circle of close gaming friends, look for an old copy of AoA. If you are looking for pickup games with new people, do check out Kings of War. I don't care for the fact that gaming is centering more and more on franchise concepts, but at least Mantic/KoW are not very demanding compared to other systems. |

Sword & Spear Fantasy will allow you to build your own armies. The rules won't be released until this summer (hopefully) but you can play them now by purchasing the Sword & Spear Ancient & Medieval rules and requesting the fantasy playtest rules from me. polkovnik.moonfruit.com link |

Armies of Arcana Mighty Armies Bear Yourselves Valiantly I have played the first two multiple times and really had fun with them. BYV looks excellent and we WILL be trying these out before too long. Thanks, John |

AoA doesn't seem to show up on Lone Gunman Games' site. Do I need to buy from the main site instead of the supposed-IS Distributor? |

I am not sure. I can try and ask on the AoA forum. Not a lot of us there since it's so new. But someone may know. |

James actually responded to my email…they've been out of stock for some time. Will AoA work for Warmaster-style 10mm games? It seems more Warhammerish, with individual models, and my google fu isnt finding much on the internet about a conversion, etc. |
