I'm awaiting delivery of the rest of my retinue, but in the meantime here are the first few test figures for my shiny lads in the classic style, from Spencer Smith Miniatures. Having only ever painted in the GW-mandated 'washes and highlights' style before, these are tremendous fun, and a sight quicker to paint!

I absolutely love the concept, and is EXACTLY what I am planning for an Old School 1/72 Napoleonics project, down to the painted green bases.

I think you have absolutely nailed the look. For me it just makes you want to pick them up and play with them.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, and apologies for the slow reply- This is my first post on TMP, and although it let me post straight away, I had to wait three days before I could reply!

I'm still patiently waiting for my package from Spencer Smith so I can make a start on the rest of the retinue. In the meantime, I've put some suitably minimalist scenery together: some cruck frame houses using Warbases' 'grub hut' kit (£3.50!) and a test model for a home-made tree. This is made from doweling and a torn up washing-up sponge. I find the 'Blue Peter' look rather appealing!

I think Charles Grant would be proud.

thanks everyone! Here is the first complete unit of bidowers. In LR it's useful to have one chap looking different to measure unit coherence, which is why beardy is out of step with the rest of the chorus line.

…and, just for fun, here's an even more old school version of the above picture…

Bravo sir – love the B&W photo look – my childhood all over again grin

Shines, I have too force myself not to gloss everything, but I usually lose out in the end, ever gloss a model that's been shaded and highlighted! Ooooooooooh- ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
