Hi there,

I really like to get some of my 3D stuff printed and was pondering with selling it afterwards. This made me wonder what scales (roughly) gamers prefer.

Cheers,

Kawe

Much of the older ADB and micro machines Star Trek ships seems to scale out around 1/3700.

Star Ranger has thoughtfully provided most everything that you need to know: star-ranger.com/Scale.htm

Fantastic feedback – thanks!

I wonder at scales like: 1/3700. 1/3700 of what, exactly? I've seen it on giant stompy robots from Japan a lot, too.

I like the model, but I have no idea how big it's supposed to be. (I didn't mean to hijack the thread, because I have the same concerns with spaceships, too.)

I like to think my spaceships (mainly Ninja Magic and Cold Navy) are 1/3000. It's arbitrary, but that works for me.

Ad Astra's minis are 1:3600 for AV:T and 1:7200 for Squadron Strike and Traveller.

Here is a discussion we had on the topic of "fleet scale" a few years ago:

Um, anything? It's a scale, not a size. If the 'real thing' is 1000 feet long then the a 1/3700 model is 1000/3700 feet long (3.24 inches). If the 'real thing' is 500 meters long it's 500/3700 meters long for the model (13.5 centimeters). Scale is unit independent. So you should measure the robot and multiply it's height in inches by 3700 to get the 'real' height in inches.

But, the ST stuff has published lengths.

The Gundam? I'm not so sure…

Now to see what Dave Webber's toys scale out at, so I can try to cogitate scale on the Honorverse ships I picked up from Ad Astra. ;->=

Well, you can still reverse engineer it from the stated scale and the model. If your robot model is stated at 1/500 scale and is 4" tall, the 'real thing' is supposedly 2000" tall (166' 8")!

@wminsing True, but Stryderg's complaint appears to be the fact he's looking at an image of which he can't gauge the actual size.

Lindberg models used to have the opposite problem: length listed on the box, but no scale.

I'm not complaining TOO much. Some fig manufacturers don't bother with length OR scale OR an image.

Well, that particular scale works out to roughly 1"=100m. 1/3900 is closer, but sometimes people go for other scales.

the ST stuff has published lengths.

The newer Gundam stuff sure does. The artists tend to make a heightline of all the various characters (and their unique mecha), and often we get complete stats of the vehicle. For example, the Macross/Robotech destroids and Valkyries. Though those are far too light for their bulk.

AdAstraGames18 Mar 2015 4:24 p.m. PST

The Honorverse stuff is 1:12,000 scale, and ranges from ships going from 4.4" long down to toothpicks.

Lion in the Stars18 Mar 2015 5:48 p.m. PST

Because Honorverse ships are freaking hyuuuuuuuuuuuuuge!

Thanks, AAG!

LitS: Yeah, I got that. ;->=

However, I'm not a big fan of the novels, so wasn't sure HOW huge.
