DVG is launching Valkyrie, a new miniatures board game, in April. The game takes place in 2050 and places mechs on the same battlefields with modern military vehicles.

Right now, our figures are roughly 1/228 in scale. We wanted to have more detail than we could get at 1/285th, and 1/144th would be too expensive for what we'd like to have in the box.

Here's a couple links to backstory and How to Play videos…

I'd like to hear you comments. Miniature gamers and BattleTech fans are exactly the kind of people our game is trying to please, and the more feedback I can get, the better of a game I can make.

Cherno15 Mar 2015 7:42 p.m. PST

I'd say it's risky for a niche miniatures game to use a scale which lies halfway between the next two most popular scales (1/285 and 1/144 as you mentioned). I don't think I've ever heard of another minatures game that uses this particular scale, so people might have a hard time finding military-themed terrain and vehicles outside of your range to build their armies with.

Them game itself looks pretty good, the only thing I would change is the large amount of white on the mech and other cards. Of course, these might just be placeholders, but a colored/textured background would enhance the look of those play aids and materials, I think.

nvdoyle15 Mar 2015 10:11 p.m. PST

Odd scale is a deal-breaker for me. 2050 and I can't make use of the wealth of micro armor I already have, or can easily get? No chance of a sale.

Dan Verssen15 Mar 2015 10:54 p.m. PST

Good point about the scale. I'll take another look at 1/285th, and see if we can make it work.

Paint it Pink16 Mar 2015 8:37 a.m. PST

The videos left me cold. Too slow – high noise to signal ratio.

As for scale: 1/144th if skirmish level, 1/300th if larger actions, but I couldn't tell you what your game does, because see above.

The Valkyrie website is up!

Please take a look and let me know what you think. If you like it, great! If there is something missing that you want to see added, let me know. :)

Logain16 Mar 2015 7:41 p.m. PST

Sounds like a pretty cool game/concept. I agree that it has to scale with 6mm, 10mm, or 15mm lines. Too many of us are already invested in one or more of these scales. So it is good for us. Many people might pick-up some of your components for use with existing games, so it is good for you.

Plus you can see examples of manufactures whose rule-system or terrain never took off, but are selling plenty of minis, and vice-versa.

sean6833317 Mar 2015 9:50 a.m. PST

I just watched some of the videos and it looks like this is something interesting.

As far as scale goes, people that already play a scale close to the game will want to be able to expand their forces with things they already own. This goes for terrain as well.

FYI… I recently picked up two of your other games and have been impressed with what I've seen of them so far.

sharkbait17 Mar 2015 2:57 p.m. PST

Dan – thanks for the information regarding Valkyrie. Like the others have mentioned, I think the scale of the minis would be best if they matched current offerings. I'd prefer 6mm or 1/285 – 1/300.

Otherwise the game looks intriguing, and, I'm definitely interested.

Artraccoon18 Mar 2015 10:26 a.m. PST

I have to agree with most of the folks here, you need to stick to a known and popular scale. Being a game with mechs, 10mm or 6mm are the best choices. Personally I'm for 6mm, the best for decent sized battles, and conforms with existing terrain, building model, and miniature lines.

Also, some of us collect a broad spectrum of miniatures in a preferred scale, and are always on the look out for new hardware to add to our existing stockpiles. You could make some bucks on miniature sales, even if the buyers don't use the Valkyrie rules or setting, by sticking to a regular scale.

Dan Verssen20 Mar 2015 7:02 a.m. PST

Because of your input, I've created a set of 6mm scale vehicles and sent the files off to Shapeways for a test print. :)

sean6833320 Mar 2015 7:20 a.m. PST

Wait a publisher/designer that listens to his market and fans???

I think I'm gonna like this guy.

sharkbait20 Mar 2015 9:18 a.m. PST

Thanks, Dan! I hope it turns out to your liking (as well as many of us minis gamers).

This reminds me that I really need to play Warfighter. I picked it up, like how it reads, but haven't played yet. Soon…

Dan Verssen20 Mar 2015 10:59 p.m. PST

Thank you Sean! :)

I think the internet is a great way to exchange information between publishers and players.

When I started playing games in the 80's, it was a very "take your best guess what people will like, and hope for the best." Given all this amazing tech, it would be a waste not to use it.

Dan Verssen20 Mar 2015 10:59 p.m. PST

I had the pleasure of working at Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) for a year or two back around 1998. I was designing the 7th Sea CCG, and I had the opportunity to work with the writers as they developed the fiction, lore, and history for the 7th Sea world.

I was able to see firsthand the impact their work had on the game. The card game grew from just being game mechanics on cards to being a fleshed-out world, that the cards lived in, and the players cared about.

I've never forgotten that lesson.

It is my hope to bring that same richness of story to Valkyrie's world. Right now, writers are hard at work bringing Valkyrie to life, and as time goes by I hope to have more writers, more stories, more adventures, until we are able to provide players with a living world deserving of their epic battles.

VALKYRIE – We've just added a video detailing the Valkyrie, Vehicle, Infantry, and Terrain pieces to the Valkyrie website…

VALKYRIE – A reminder that the Valkyrie Kickstarter is launching on Tuesday, April 7th.

We have added new content to the Valkyrie website including world fiction, art, Valkyrie Display Sheets, Vehicle Data Cards, a video detailing the Valkyrie, Vehicle, and Terrain miniatures, and more How to Play Videos!

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that famed science fiction author Daniel Keys Moran has agreed to write a story for Valkyrie! :) Thank you Daniel!

It was suggested to us by the people on the Miniatures Page that we go with an established scale, such as 1/285th. We ordered a test 3D printing of a few vehicles to see how they would look, and they arrived yesterday. We're going to play a few games with the new miniatures and see how they work. We should know in the next 24 hours.

It's suggestions like this can that really improve a game and make it a perfect fit for people. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please post them. :)

Please share this update. We are ramping up to the Kickstarter launch and we need your help to make it our greatest first day ever!

Glad to hear that 1/285 is being considered. An advantage is that you might be able to do a deal with the current modern 1/285 makers to supply the vehicles with cross promotion, while concentrating on the Valk model side. Just a suggestion – I'm looking forward to the kick start.

Dan Verssen01 Apr 2015 4:44 p.m. PST

Thank you David!

Which companies would you suggest contacting for 1/28th? Do any of them do plastic?

I'm really hoping the 1/285th proofs look good. It would be great to use an establish scale.

David in Coffs02 Apr 2015 3:28 a.m. PST

When I was into moden micro – 20 yrs ago – it was all metal – H&R infantry with GHQ vehicles. It may be that some of the established brands might be already heading to resin/plastic if not already there. If not, then cross promotion could be that expansion modern vehicles are made of whatever they currently are, while the Valks are in plastic. Good luck with the kick starter! I'm counting down the days. :-)

Dan Verssen02 Apr 2015 6:31 p.m. PST

We've been working for a few weeks on it, and Valkyrie's Kickstarter will launch with Solitaire rules ready to go!

Dan Verssen02 Apr 2015 6:32 p.m. PST

David – It looks like 1/285th are still metal. Hopefully we can work out some kind of deal with one of the companies for extra components. :)

Sad news is that the kick starter has been postponed. The great news from DVG is:
Here's the plan for the relaunch…
I'm working on a redesign now, and hope to launch a new KS in a couple months. When we do, we'll have all finished components to show and a full rulebook. The world of KS has changed in the past year. In the past, it was okay to say, "These are prototype components." Now, people want to see final components, and that's what we'll give them.
As far as game mechanics, we're already looking at the systems to see what we can streamline.
You might be thinking, "All those are fine changes, but those are details. Are you making a big change to make Valkyrie stand out?"
We are.
We are redesigning Valkyrie from the ground up to be a solitaire game.
Valkyrie will have full campaigns, character experience, and Battle Group management.
You'll start by choosing a Valkyrie Pilot template (such as Rookie, Athlete, or Grizzled Veteran), allocating a few starting skill points, purchasing your initial Battle Group, and then selecting a campaign. During battles, you'll command your forces, and the system will run the opposing forces.
We're drawing on our years of experience designing solo games like our Air Leader series and Field Commander series to make Valkyrie a unique solitaire game in the miniatures world.
As you complete missions, you'll gain Victory Points towards toward winning the campaign, as well as points to allocate to your Battle Group. You'll be able to buy more skills for your Pilot, upgrade your Valkyrie, trade in your Valkyrie for a better one, add more support forces to your Battle Group, and have supporting characters join your Staff.
You will be able to command the forces of any nation, and fight against any nation in every campaign. As we release each new faction, it will come with all the cards needed for it to be both player controlled and system controlled.
Valkyrie will also come with head-to-head rules for those times you want to crush your friends under your mighty steel feet.
