I hadn't played a tabletop game in going on three years. I had made a few stabs at doing stuff just for fun (Weird West, Imagi-Nation, DBA 3.0) but I had to stop painting altogether in early December because my shaking and vision didn't allow me to finish my Persians to the level that I wanted.
Last weekend, my buddy and I played a game of Vor: The Maelstrom. I proxied Union with my Mishima troops, he still had his Growlers ready to go. We had an amazingly good time, even if we forget a third of the combat rules until the last few turns of the game. One thing we both realized is that Vor has stood up remarkably well for being 15 years old, having a good mix of playability, fun, tactical planning, and player engagement.
I have enough unpainted Union troops to do pretty much anything I want to within the confines of the forcelist, and I decided to break out the paints and try some simple painting. Certainly not the insanely decorated Persians I last tried, but black boots and guns, grey uniforms and kit, olive drab helmets and a variety of flesh tones turned out to be surprisingly doable on these chunky figures.
And bases! It has been over a year since I did any round plastic bases, I had to re-learn mixing glue and water all over again. Once I finish painting the minis and getting them based, I will post some pics here.
Some pics of Union/Mishima vs. Grolwers:
The game ended with his Chieftain killing my last guy with only one Life Point remaining. A VERY close game!
