I think I may be descended from Sir Guy Fairfax, a Yorkist (I am, according to my wife's genealogical research descended from 'Black Tom' Fairfax's grandfather, who does appear to be descended from Guy) I realise the link maybe somewhat tenuous, but I'd like to put some of his retinue on the table anyway. However I can't find any likely colours. Any ideas? |

I found a William Fairfax in my heraldry book, but no Guy. Any relation? |

The coat of arms of course having nothing to do with livery colours. I never heard of him – seems like you are free to use what you like. :) |

They are mostly Thomas or Guy, but there are some William's. Those do appear to be the arms, though I know livery isn't necessarily related. I could do any colours, but then that would just be a bunch of figures! My wife's maiden name is Lovell, so men from Francis are nearing completion. |

G'day, LH. From the torse shown on the full arms at link it would appear that the livery was argent and gules. The arms are obviously of a later date, but the liveries had fairly much settled by then. Cheers. Dal. |

Lovell's arms are Or and Gules, but his livery Blue over Yellow |

Lovell's arms are Or and Gules, but his livery Blue over Yellow Yes, but the torse (representing twisted cloth and either shown worn on a helmet or as a twist above the shield, eg the twist below the Federation star on the Australian national arms) usually shows the livery (though that convention comes from slightly later than the WOTR). As is shown here, where Clifford's torse is white: link The livery colours don't have to be different to the arms' tinctures. Cheers. Dal. |
