I've since painted up all the skirmishers, but you can see that the project is coming along nicely.

I should have 26 brigades done by the end of the evening. These guys are all on 60mm bases, about 150-170 figs per base, or about 1200 figs in this brigade total, for about a 1:20 figure ratio. Not bad. I'd been leaning towards larger units for a long time but these turned out so nicely that I'm dedicated to getting both armies done now for 1809, using the GA Wagram OOB. WIth 3mm figs I can have my cake and eat it too: every battalion at Wagram represented and "flagged" but presented in a way that looks good in the display case and isn't as fiddly as my 20mm x 10mm bases were. I'll post some more pics as I get more bases painted up.

It does look good! Not my cup of tea, but you do make it appealing!

Lovely!

Glad you guys like it! I'm working on setting up a blog so I can share some more hi-resolution eye candy. Shouldn't take me much longer. There's a lot more detail that photobucket cuts out…

Excellent Work!

HistoryPhD14 Mar 2015 4:32 p.m. PST

You always do an excellent job! Did you elect to go with brigade bases?

forwardmarchstudios14 Mar 2015 4:41 p.m. PST

Joes Shop- Thanks!

Here's the link to my new blog.

If you click the photos on the post you can see the high-resolution pics, which really show the detail off a lot more. I'll start putting my photos and maybe some tutorials up there as I go along. By the end of this weekend I should have almost all of the brigades finished up. Unless real-life intervenes. We shall see….

HPhD- I did for now. I decided to do 2 test bases just to see how they'd turn out, and the end result was so good (and easy) that I decided I'd just do a Blucher set for now. Blucher looks like it gives a good game, and I can get a force together quickly, plus the table set-up for brigade level games is easy enough. At some point in the future I'll go ahead and do some more units like the ones I did for Pico Armor- 1:1, true ground scale, etc. Terrain for Blucher is going to be a LOT easier, for instance.

I'm not sure it is for me, but it looks interesting. Please post again when you get more done.

I am starting out doing Napoleonics in 6mm, I think 3mm is too small for me but you have done a brilliant job on them, they look great and a full battlefield will be super to see.

von Winterfeldt15 Mar 2015 6:27 a.m. PST

very innovative, inspiring

Decebalus16 Mar 2015 5:05 a.m. PST

Absolutely brilliant optic. I really think 2/2mm is better than 6mm because it goes one step further in showing whole units and not caring about the uniform.

Plese give us pictures with your troops in terrain.

And you can play all grand tactical rules with these, not only Blücher (VnB, GA, FPGA too).

But i have one sad information. Austrian bataillons in 1809 didnt had two flags. Line regiments the first battalion had the white Leibfahne, the second and third battalion the yellow Ordinärfahne.

Trajanus16 Mar 2015 8:09 a.m. PST

fms,

Any particular reason for photography in the bathroom? We're you flushed with success? (They do look good BTW)

forwardmarchstudios16 Mar 2015 9:19 a.m. PST

Trajanus- haha, yes. It's literally the only room in the house with good lighting!! And even then only for about two hours every day. I need to get a light box set up.

Decebalus- You're absolutely right, it just looks really good with two flags. I'm going to make the rest with one flag probably but keep these the way they are. I'll definitely make sure to let people know about this oversight when showing them the figs. One flag is a lot less work.

I did another 12 bases up over the weekend so I'm up to 20 Austrian brigades, one super-cool looking kurassier test brigade that I'll post pics of later, and 6 French brigades that aren't completely finished. The projects coming along at a nice clip. It helps that I already have 95% of the painting done.

Edzard16 Mar 2015 3:06 p.m. PST

Look great, what is the small grass you are using? My static grass are even too big for 6mm…

And is there a way to "follow" your blog? I'm sure I wont catch all your posts here, unfortunatly.

forwardmarchstudios17 Mar 2015 11:46 p.m. PST

Edzard-
It's Woodland Scenics brand medium green. It's their standard size. I stick it into the glue with tweezers in clumps, then using the flat side of a brush handle (as opposed to the point of the handle) of a brush to gently tamp it down to the correct height.

I think you need a blogger account to follow on there. Or maybe just a google account, since google owns it. I couldn't find a way to follow it until i logged in.

CATenWolde18 Mar 2015 2:44 a.m. PST

I've thought about trying 3mm for a project, but one thing that worries me is whether you would be able to tell the difference between infantry and cavalry at a realistic game distance (3' or so). Does anybody have any photos of infantry and cavalry (and ideally artillery) on an actual tabletop at gaming distance?

Cheers,

Christopher

HistoryPhD18 Mar 2015 3:47 p.m. PST

I have a blogger account and I'm logged in and I still see no way to follow your blog. I think you might need to add a "join this blog" widget. CATenWolde, I don't have any photos on hand, but you can easily tell the difference between infantry, cavalry, and artillery at normal gaming differences.

CATenWolde19 Mar 2015 5:52 a.m. PST

Thanks HistoryPhD

Cheers,

Christopher (ArchaeologyPhD) ;)

forwardmarchstudios19 Mar 2015 6:58 a.m. PST

I think that I've fixed it. There was some kind of widget I had to add in.

1815Guy20 Mar 2015 5:27 a.m. PST

I think you have used the wrong shade of yellow on the Hungarian knots on the trousers…….

:)

forwardmarchstudios20 Mar 2015 7:52 a.m. PST

1815Guy- That was intended! Like I said on my blog, you have to paint up a few shades when dealing with the smaller figs.

I've finished up three brigades of cav, a base of Austrian Kurassiers, a base with both Austrian dragoons and green-coated cheveulegere (which apparently weren't at Wagram from what I can tell, but the green jackets just give too much pop to ignore) and a base of French currassiers. 40 figs per base with two regiments represented each. You can definitely tell the difference between them from infantry, although kurassier v. dragoons is a bit harder, I admit.

I'll get some pics up this afternoon or this weekend. I've also got some more litko 60mm squares on the way, so nothings holding me back from getting it done now.

Desert Fox21 Mar 2015 11:29 a.m. PST

The only thing stopping me from jumping into the 3mm pool is the cav. I have seen infantry painted and based, but I have not seen any cab painted and based.

Looking forward to seeing your 3mm cav painted and based.
