Can a unit shoot over a friendly unit that has gone to ground? |

Sort of remember a yankee unit that sent 50 men to beat a battery , a yankee battery who did it repeatedly after having been asked to stop several times. Lots of wads, bad propulsion shells etc coming their way. |

Not sure about that but a Union officer at Gettysburg actually did threaten a battery with his pistol if they didn't stop firing over his unit. |

Poague shot over his own wounded during the Wilderness halting the Union attacks long enough for Longstreet to come up but it wasn't common. The sabot's had a habit of causing "friendly" casualities when doing this |

Only artillery may fire overhead, and then with the appropriate distance between firer and target. |

The answer is "yes' but it isn't a lot of fun for the guys in front. As pointed out above, if the unit is artillery there will be wooden sabots dropping short. If infantry is firing unburned powder rains down for some distance. |
