Looking for a ruleset that can deal with something like 4-6 planes a player doesn't involve much bookkeeping and can be understood by my 12 year old son, we have tried scramble and day of eagles, I liked the good differences in the aircraft stats but they were both just a little too complicated, also if it doesn't need hex's that would stop me having to try and get a hex mat.

The old Blue Skies series would work, but it uses hexmats.

You can make one at home, with a little effort.

I recommend using an appropriately colored bedsheet, and marking the corners of the hexes using a template, in pencil, and then going back to make them a little more visibly, if required.

I did a desert mat, and just used pencil marks. Worked well, and the hex markings can be seen, but are very unobtrusive, unlike some hexmats I see people using

Red Sun/Blue Sky, and White Star/Blue Sky were on sale, over on the Marketplace, here on TMP.

You need Red Sun's basic rules, or Squadrons, to use White Star.

What about luftwaffe1946? I here its similar to blue skies without the cost but I read a review on delta victor that called it clunky

Try Junior General for lots of rules for kids:
"Our wargames are built with students in mind. They are easy, quick to play, and even easier to learn. Plus our paper figures are built to complement them!"

May I put in a word for the 'Instant' series of air wargame rules. The iteration for WW2 is 'Instant Bandits' and works well at the 4-6 aircraft level. I also think they would very much suit a 12 year old gamer and are designed to be 'quick play'.

Can be found around the 'net for free.

(I should declare an interest – I wrote them!)

Wings of Glory is a great system IMHO and meets all of your requirements. I prefer the WWI rules but the WWII are good fun too.

Wings at War ('at', not 'of') provides rules for Battle of Britain and Defence of the Reich, which come with starter packs of about a dozen planes as well. Do note that it is designed around 1/600 planes, but you can scale up, as they are very easily adaptable.
Admittedly, it is designed for larger games of a dozen or more a side, and almost every decision involves a roll of the dice to avoid almost any record-keeping, so luck is a major deciding factor. What may be useful is that objectives are decided by force size, so an inferior force can win simply by securing their lower objective target.
I know that Tumbling Dice and Brookhurst have them in stock, and the starter packs are of TD aircraft, so if you enjoy them, you can get some extras.
The Battle of Britain set (which I own) covers the main Luftwaffe vs RAF conflict, including rules for bombing of strategic targets, such as airfields and radar stations, as well as cities. Due to the operational-scale intention, the deployment rules also add an interesting dimension. Furthermore, there are also provisions for raids by the Corpo Aereo, although no Italian aircraft are included within the starter pack.
The starter pack contains 3 Spitfire Mk.Is, 3 Hurricane Mk.Is, 3 Do17, 4 Bf109 and 2 Bf110.
The rules contain stats for most aeroplanes involved, although if you'd like some detail as to which, I'd be happy to elaborate. (I got some Blenheim Mk.IFs without knowing that they weren't accounted for)
I don't currently own the Germany set, although it similarly covers the bombing of cities and strategic targets, and has stats for Luftwaffe (including Me262 and Ar234 jets), USAAF and RAF. Somebody did upload a photo of the covers, so I do know which aircraft are included, and which are included in the rules (although not what the stats are).
The starter pack contains 4 P-51D, 3 B-17 and 4 Me262.

Bag the Hun. ( Will need hexmat though.) When my son was 10 he liked them.

Good luck

Joe
