"Battle of Tolentino, 1815" Topic

Everyone:

I've been thinking of gaming Tolentino this May for the 200th anniversary. I've found some OOB's and overviews of the battle but I haven't been able to find any maps of the area. Does anyone have a map or a already designed scenario?

There's a boardgame of this battle that I found on Board Game Geek web site. One of the images shows the map board for the game which will at least give you a start.

My library is in storage and will not be liberated until after May.

I am interested in this campaign,even if it is not widely known in the English speaking world.From my library I recall no maps.

Sounds interesting. Academics usually just pass this off as a preliminary comment before launching into a detailed study of the Belgian campaign. The size forces involved would make it suitable for any brigade level rules (my choice being FOGN). Regards Alan

I realize this response is a year late and I wish I had seen this post earlier.

For Tolentino, use a long narrow valley with steep mountains on each side. The armies are positioned across the valley and the fighting goes up and down the length. While the floor of the valley is fairly flat, there are two ridges right in the middle of the valley, running lengthwise. These ridges have a castle and large walled estates at each end that were treated more as obstacles to avoid then as fortresses. The ridges have steep sides, so there should be a significant movement penalty for climbing them. They also have some clumps of trees and maybe a rocky outcrop or two. The Austrians started on part of one ridge and all of the other. The battle paused for another day after Murat's forces drove the Austrians off of the first ridge and regrouped to storm the second one.
There is a road that runs between the ends of the ridges, with a small town. You could put a small hill (smaller than a ridge) in the middle of the battlefield, on the Neapolitan right, Austrian left.
Scale: The smaller of the two armies, if put into a single line, should be able to block the width of the valley and still have 1/3 of its units left over for a reserve. Units that advance successfully up the floor of the valley on either side risk getting attacked in the flank by enemy units still on the ridge. So you have to clear the ridge. And it is almost impossible to "trap" the Austrians, since they can withdraw down the valley. The town of Tolentino did not figure in the actual combat.
