When i started wargaming, i started with 15mm peninsula British, not original.

When i started 7yw i did british there to, not original

When i did awi, i did Guildford courthouse(not original)

When i did 30tw i did sweds, not original

When i did Samurai(all 5 times I've tried) I did takeda vs kenshin the least original of all samurai related projects.

And now I've been told feudal western euope and Italian wars are the new big thing, two projects I started late last years.

I'm such a unoriginal hipster wargamer.

Oh, the shame,
As a semi-original hipster gamer, I dub thee "Sheep". Wear it proudly.

There are many "hipster" wargamers at TMP.

We call them that because they've had hip replacement therapy.

What's wrong with being unoriginal?

OSchmidt11 Mar 2015 10:19 a.m. PST

I really don't see the connection in the original post between what he did and "unoriginal?

Would original mean that in the Thirty Years War you did Hunchback left handed Moluccan Pesants from 890 A.D. versus Antedeluvian Thespian interior decorators with long sharp nails and weighted hand bags?

I forget who said it but whenever someone comes out with a new line of imperial Romans or late ww2 Germans, everyone complains that it's overdone… then we all proceed to buy the figures anyways.

Well the only way to be 'original' is to game a currently unplayed genre or historical era…..which makes getting miniatures for your 'original' games difficult. wink

Hey, not only am I fairly unoriginal (I'm thinking… thinking…), I'm sure I do it all far less well than most of the people I'm copying! But imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, as they say. It only needs to be original in the sense of it's new and exciting to you. That buzz when you really want to get into a scenario or campaign idea, it's better than…. (I won't go there)

Henry Martini11 Mar 2015 8:46 p.m. PST

Yes, Earl: if there are figures for it you can be sure someone will buy and use them – and sometimes an obscure subject takes off purely on the basis of an inspiring figure range, e.g. Darkest Africa.

In the old days if there were no commercial figures available for a conflict people resorted to making or converting their own; you'd even see articles in the hobby press about such campaigns with suggestions on what to use for conversions. I don't think that approach would get a look in in this era of superabundance.

It's natural to be unoriginal when you're first attracted to a game by what's already been done for it. If Space Orks were what attracted you to 40k, why would you first go buy a bunch of Tau?
