This week end at my local shop a WW 2 Normandy Battle in 15mm between the British 7th Armored and 2nd SS Panzer Div's was running. I noticed the 7th Armored player had either converted or purchase a troop of Daimler armored cars with the turrets removed and a ring with a .50 cal M2 MG placed there instead. I did a search on the web and have as yet seen any photos of these armored used during the war. They kind of looked like the Ferret armored cars of the 50's but with the side mounted spare tire missing to me. Any one know if the British ever used such armored cars in NWE? |

The Inns Of Court regiment fielded them, affectionately known as Sawn Off Daimlers, or SODs for short. I'm not sure about the .50 cal though – Brens were more usual, but the odd .50 cal wouldn't be a shock.

Sounds like a mockup of the Daimler Dingo scout car, which was the progenitor of the Ferret. |

There's also a picture of one – again Inns of Court – in September 1944 in Helmond. I am not sure if they were just command vehicles? Inns of Court also used Dingos – the SOD was a lot heavier and bigger. Regards Edward |

2nd Household Cavalry Regiment also fielded SODs later in the war. Armament was typically a Bren or .30. Never heard of one with a .50. Like Stuart Recces, the lack of a turret made them much faster due to the loss of weight and gave them a considerably lower profile, which is what made them so useful for recce. They were also a lot roomier than a Dingo, so an extra radio and radio operator could be accommodated. They were certainly used at the troop level. My guess is troop commanders' mounts? |

I'd also add that they seem to have been mainly a post-Normandy thing. |

Yeah the Inns Of Court reorganised as light troops of just two Dingoes, and heavy troops of two turreted Daimlers and a SOD. |

Thanks to all for your help and pictures. I did contact the Hobby Shop and found out the cars were not scratch built but purchased from the "Military Models Company" and checking the manufacturing section here at TMP I was able to see the models and yes it was a M2 HMG on the ring. |

Never heard of them – do you have a link by any chance? Might be worth a look. :-) |

Dom, the best way to get to their site is go to the TMP Manufacturing section. Click on G and scroll down to Gaming Models. Click on that and the TMP provides the link. The have some interesting 15mm WW 2. A lot of the German use of French hulls stuff and Sdkfz 251 with a truck bed I have never seen. Also the Pz 1 flak tank that I have not seen in 15mm before. It is a US company so postage looks to be at a fair price. I hope this helps you and thanks for the picture of the SOD. The models are worth a look. |

If you can have a Uni Carrier in 44 driving around with a car windscreen attached and still sporting a Boyes Anti tank rifle you can have anything. |

Cheers Green Beanie – didn't know Gaming Models did that one. Must admit I'm dubious about the .50s though – I'd probably rearm with Brens. |
