We are looking to start a large 28mm Indian Mutiny Campaign. As this is kind of "one of those in betweens" of standard colonial skirmish (would call for sword and the flame) and full out formal battles (some for of Napoleonic/Crimean rules), I thought I might ask the throbbing brain that is TMP what kind of rules people are using. We were thinking maybe trying out Black Powder with them???

I use Piquet Field of Battle and it gives a very good game for the Mutiny.

I use Sharp Practice although we mostly do skirmish level stuff. Black powder would work for larger battles though.

There was a very clever ( as usual) and rather simple rule set that used to be sold by Freikorps ( yes I am even older than that) called Honour and Fortune. Best ever seen for the subject, from 18 th cty to the mutiny.

"The Devils Wind" by David Bickley Indian Mutiny specific set of rules.

I think BP will work.

I have Devil's Wind, which is rather 'old school'. I can pass you my copy if you want it.

Let me check if I still have my copy of Honour and Fortune when I get home. This is 80s-style, which means lots of tables, IIRC.

If you can wait, there is also this:

There is also John Company by TVAG:

There was an article in WSS a few years ago with lists, stats and other ideas for using BP for the Mutiny. A couple of members of our group used it to play a number of IM games.

Personally, I'd only give the mutineers a single overall commander and no brigade commanders, which I think accurately reflects the historical reality, and would render them as static and inept relative to the British as they should be.

For something a little offbeat and written specifically for the Mutiny, rather than adapted from another set, look at Sepoy. link

We've used the 20th Anniversary edition of TSATF for our Indian Mutiny battles, both large and small. We have also used 800 Fighting Englishmen, also written by Larry Brom, for the bigger battles of the war and feel that this rules set was very easy, fun to play, and gave the right feel for the period. A link to both rules sets below.

Cheers,
JB
