Nope, but if I were, it'd be made of foam insulation board, with a nice liftoff section to give the requisite effect. The volcano idea is a nice touch, for easier access, in order to launch ICBMs, and helos. I'll be the Iranians wish they had some of those to hide their facilities under. |

Mako11, Wow. If the Iranians had a couple of those, a raid on the facilities would be a fascinating game to see! It wouldn't have to be inside an extinct volcano either. Dan |

I want to build a underground abandon military base for my adventurers to investigate but not sure as to what would be the right way to go about it. So yes if someone out there has a good answer and pictures being a plus would be helpful. |
Cacique Caribe | 08 Mar 2015 8:59 p.m. PST |
War Monkey, If I can come up with decent foam wire cutting templates, I might try some of these shapes: TMP link But, instead of huge sections that will be difficult to carry or store, tiles might be the way to go for a lot of the complex: TMP link However, like you, I would love to see s couple of successful projects first. Print on paper, glue to foamcore (or do like I do and print on full-page labels, and stick to foamcore)… Modular Lair (includes dangerous reactor core), plus Amenities (sleeping barracks, day room/mess hall, Detention center, security offices, security check point, motor pool, morgue, treasure vault, factory floor and observation room): link Missile silo for your lair: link |
Big Martin Back | 09 Mar 2015 5:05 a.m. PST |
Yes – but not anything as complicated as that. Essentially, mine was 2 levels of subterranean labs, strongrooms, offices etc. and built of paper on foamcore. |
War Monkey | 09 Mar 2015 7:22 a.m. PST |
tiles might be the way to go for a lot of the complex: Tile base on 1 by 1 foot squares might work, and have larger tiles for larger rooms based on 1 foot by 2 foot square.

CC Im currently putting together a research station/ evil lair type environment, but been struggling to come up with a way to stop it looking like a bunch of card board randomly stuck together but Sgt Paper has solved that for me.
since this pic was taken Ive added more rooms and access ways, not quite the 007esque volcano lair but it'll do the job. |
Servo3000 | 09 Mar 2015 12:09 p.m. PST |
Although the volcano, extinct or only believed extinct, is a problem to model, it's as important to an evil lair as is a death ray or a cadre of henchmen and should not be omitted to save a buck or two. Also, creeping "magma" can pose an additional thrill for evil and good guys alike. I suggest oatmeal. |
War Monkey | 09 Mar 2015 12:17 p.m. PST |
Soldado Looking good! You could add strips of wire as well to the walls plus resistors from any electronic shop as well, You can add strips from cereal boxes for joint seams or squares to make panels too. You should post as to how you made those, additional pictures would be cool too. What grid size are you using? |
Soldado | 09 Mar 2015 12:55 p.m. PST |
Why thank you War Monkey I did these bits as a concept after watching the 2.5d dungeon stuff on you tube. A quick non pic tutorial then as im away from home at the mo. Using double walled corrugated cardboard draw a 4cm by 4cm grid and cut the floor shapes out that you want such as S, L and T bends. Cut straight lengths to match for the walls and glue these to the outside of the floors so you have the full 4cm inside. I use hot glue for this as it set quicker and you don't have to spend ages waiting for it to set. Now as you can see the outside of corners dont line up, Im not bothered about this as Im planning to skin it once Ive sorted the other bits out. The bigger issue is where the corners are "Inside" and have to meet. Here I compress the meeting edges so that they are 45 degrees then glue them, this gives a nice tight join. The pipes are just straws Im sure you clever peeps can work out how thats done right? for the buttresses where the floor meets the wall I cut 1cm wide strips from single walled corrugated cardboard and cut to length, I then pulled one wall off the strip so you left with a "P" shape if your gonna meet a corner then you'll need to cut at least one of the meeting strips to 45 degrees so the look flush and then glue it down with the fat part of the "P" either up or down to your taste (lower gives a wider corridor, upper makes the floor plan narrower) Well I hope this makes sense I'll post some more pics if this thread is still active when im home at the end of the week. As for fitting it out with gubbins etc thats the next stage, Im thinking that the link Sgt Paper posted are a quick fix to get get colour and detail on it for the short term. |

I did a SF concept of partial underground golf course and botanical garden on a low atmosphere planet. It would be open like that but much bigger. For any kind of bunker or hangar on earth it should be sectioned off to isolate the maintenance area from the launch area. Plus to firewall off sections with blast doors. |

Soldado Thanks, I'll follow your lead but I think I will do it with foam core board. With some modifications to your plans. |

I seem to recall, at con long ago, a missile bunker scene that sat strangely off the table. Turned out, once the attackers had reached and entered the bunker, it lifted off, and there was a recess for the final battle. Simple rectangular space, but full enough for interesting 'terrain'. Another underground set up at a con was what looked like a big foam cube, with tunnels/mine shafts around the outside, and one ramp up to 'the surface' on one side. Doug |

I'm in the process of building a second level for our lair complex using Hirst Blocks. It's multipurpose. Can be a lair or starhsip corridors and We'll be making a TARDIS control room for it…one of these days. <sigh> |

I'm thinking of snagging all the old XCom base terrain pieces from my computer, and then building modules that way. Though I think the beast is going to end up as a ~5x5 table if I do that… IIRC, the XCom terrain pieces are 9x9, and the base is 6 terrain pieces square. Would be fun/different, that's for sure! |

The website UFOpaedia.org has all the base facility images from all the XCom games. From 1994's XCom: UFO Defense, it's immediate sequel Terror from the Deep, Apocalypse (though they don't have the big images from the base defense maps), 2012's XCom Enemy Unknown, and even a prequel game called "the Bureau." Takes a bit of time to dig the base facilities images out from the wiki file system, but it's totally worth it. Gives you a very large pile of 9x9 or 18x18 structures you could use. The UFO Defense base facilities are 2 levels tall, while the TFTD base facilities are 3 levels tall. The hangars and airlock actually have a level 0, below all the rest of the base with water access. I'm thinking 9" peel-and-stick vinyl on 2" pink foam. |
