So I got the book, and while waiting for it to arrive, I'd like to ask a couple more questions about it.

Does it have character advancement written into it? Do the characters have levels or do I need the RPG books to apply experience points and such things into the game?

I was also thinking about getting AD&D adventure modules and play them out with the skirmish system, maybe giving created characters some bonuses like hitpoints and inventories for loot and such. I'd like to play a RPG-lite game with the system.

My plan is to have a project per adventure module, getting all the appropriate models and terrain and then play the adventure out on the tabletop.

Unfortunately it doesn't have rules for advancement. It does have a ton of monster stats from the Monster Manual, and it has rules for converting statistics from AD&D, and it does have a chart for calculating experience points, but you would need to calculate he experience points needed to advance your characters. All you would need is the Players Handbook.

So the player's handbook will cover leveling up and such? I picked that one up, along with some setting material. Haven't bought Dungeon Masters guide yet.

The DMG would only necessary to get lists of magic items to convert to the BS Skirmish game. I would suggest holding off on the RPG books, until you get a feel for what the BS Skirmish game is like, and what it is missing -- unless you want the RPG books.

I'm still playing 2nd Ed. AD&D, and I still love it. Don't mean to say anything against any edition, it's just that I really enjoy 2nd (the Specialty Priests are fantastic, if you are willing make custom clerics -- lot's of work, but oh so fun…). Cheers!
