Has it been that long since the last rant about this? Let's make it a Poll this time. 1) White straps on dark uniforms. 2) Diced hose on Highlanders 3) Drums. They seem to combine the worst of white straps with no room to paint detail. 4) Spiral Striped lances. Right up there with diced hose. 5) Figures with far too many packs and straps. A variant of 1). There are not that many off-white canvas colors to do a GW or Heartbreaker goblin. Or a Hessian musketeer, for that matter. 6) Figures with far too much detail that seems to never get finished. See 5) above. That should be enough to get us started, hainna? |

Hair that hasn't been sculpted "right" so as to be able to take a drybrush or an ordinary highlight well. I have this problem especially with some older historical figures, like those from Redoubt. Frankly I prefer slightly stylized, cartoonish-looking hair, only because it's more intuitive and enjoyable to paint. Very shallow detail, especially when it's in abundance. Doesn't take a drybrush well, and needs to be studied carefully before being highlighted/shaded in the ordinary way, so one doesn't miss anything. The best sculptors are the ones who know to avoid this kind of stuff. Painting a figure sculpted by someone like Mike Owen or Mark Copplestone is a delightfully intuitive process and other sculptors should learn from them (says the person who can't sculpt). |

Punkrabbit has it – for me too. Always looking back or forward and getting cheesed off with what is on the table at the moment. It doesn't seem to matter whether they are mine or a commission, quite often I get bored doing my own stuff and switch to a customer's work – then get bored with that too. |

Straps beat all. Scabbards also sometimes. I don't find sculpted, raised scabbards any easier than freehand. Belts usually suck too. I dream of a time when you could just pour paint from a single bottle on to a figure and the right pigments would separate themselves and adhere to the correct places. So instead of 10 bottles of different colors to paint the imperial guard you would just purchase one bottle (say IG1808) and pour it on. I'm pretty sure that this is chemically and scientifically possible at the molecular level but high tech $$ rarely come to our hobby. |

I have a deep aversion to painting anything significantly larger than a 28mm-ish soldier. For me, this mainly includes WW2 AFVs and buildings/ruins. I do a decent job with the little stuff, but the bigger items make me feel hopelessly inadequate. I blame all of you that do such fantastic work on these type of things and then post pictures of them on TMP! :-p |
