My question is this----What method(s)/tools do you use for putting the King's Cypher, Crown and Regimental number on the front of 25/28mm drums? I've tried using very fine paint brushes and that does not work (for me).

Thanks much!

Impressionism is your friend! Life is too short for painting cyphers on drums.

^^What he said. A general shape sans number.

I don't think I've ever bothered! They are painted the base color and the edging with the strings and heads. That's about it.

Same as Sundance.

Painters who don't bother with trying to paint cyphers, ect. on the fronts of drums-----
I appreciate your feedback---I really do! BUT, I am only interested in hearing back from those painters/modelers who have tried to do this and their opinions and recommendations.

I always do a blob of base colour, then use a fine permaneny marker in the correct colour to put as much detail as I can be bothered with to add detail and shape the blob's edge.

Tom – I paint drums. On 25mm they are not that difficult to do, provided you have a bit of patience. If you look at the drummer figure most of the drum at the front of the figure is going to be available for the design. The cords are far too thick to be in scale, so I always increase the size of the design accordingly. For British drum there is usually a central motif surrounded by a "GR" scroll, often with some other motifs in the corners. My method is to ensure the central motif straddles at least 2 cords' worth of space on the drum (even though in real life that may not be correct). Then you build the scroll and everything else around that.

If you look at my British AWI units here, the most recent regiments all have painted drums (scroll down a bit):

Giles,
Funny that you should be P.M.ing me! Actually, last night (prior to sending you that T.M.P./P.M. I was (again) looking at your photo's of drummers on 'Tarelton's Quarter' and trying to determine if you used some form of ink pens or what? I have tried (without luck) to paint the cypher and such on, but it just never looks good enough for me!
I do hope that I did not offend you with that p.m. and what I was asking about/referring to.
