Hi all, I am looking for a good set of rules to do the retreat from Moscow with the excellent Perry figures. Thanks in advance. Hunlion |

I ran my retreat game as a skirmish game using a variant from the GW Lord of the Rings inappropriately named Strategy Battle Game. It gives a great feel for the period and it sold me when I could retreat while continuing to give alternating volley fire. Simple, clean and easy to pick up. There is a yahoo group as well where you can download all of the variants for free. At a larger scale, it all depends on your preference, but I went with skirmish because of the individual nature of the figures. I ran mine back in 2012 but now I wish I had waited with the great range of releases coming out by the Perry brothers! Larry |

We had a retreat from Russia game last year using Legends of the Old West – same game engine as LotR mentioned by FreemanL above, but with rules for muskets and other black powder weapons in the Alamo supplement. The game had multiple players, each with a group of stragglers from the Grande Armee. The referee ran the opposition which included peasants, cossacks, Russian regulars, bears, wolves and other nastiness. Each player had a randomly included personal objective, such as "Fight a duel with d'Hubert" or "drag this cart full of looted treasure" . Some info here: link and some photos here: link |

You might consider GASLIGHT. I might also recommend Brother Against Brother. While that is a Civil War set of rules, it has optional rules for the French and Indian War as well. A very fun game. I love the morale system. Buck Surdu (one of the GASLIGHT authors) |

For a simpler set of skirmish rules try Ganesha Games "Song of Drums and Shakos". |

1812: White Death should be coming out this year and it specifically designed for the retreat. It looks very cool, the only problem I see is it requires a game master and is really meant for clubs and conventions. 1812whitedeath.com I've always thought Muskets and Tomahawks would be a good option until studio tomahawk comes out with their Shakos and Bayonets rules. It would require some conversion however. There's a blogger who's done a bunch of conversion work for it, but he doesn't seem to want to share his work under the premise that he is somehow infringing on the copyright of the original game (even though he's not charging anything for the variant). Two Hour Wargames also has a small scale Napoleonic variant set called the 95th, but it's more geared toward the Peninsular. Ultimately I think 1812 White Death will be your best bet. By the time you have everything painted it will probably be out… |

I am so looking forward to 1812-White Death. Man, 2015 is going to be hard on my wallet. |
