Hi folks, I have been impressed with the triads from foundry for uniform colours, and I am wondering if anyone does a similar layering selection for horse flesh.

It might need more than 3 layers to get a decent horse colour represented, which is fine; and I can always mix my own, but it is so much quicker and easier if it comes ready to use.

Any suggestions/experience shared would be welcome. Thanks.

Foundry also do horse colour triads.
There is a suggested set of horse colours using Vallejo link
Some of the brown triads from Coat d'Arms would work.

I like the Foundry colours though in 15mm I often use just two of the colours and also a wash.

The Foundry painting guide also includes a bunch of suggested combinations using other Foundry paints.

Jeffrey – that looks very useful. Thanks.

Reaper does some nice triads. I've used some for horses, which are generally my bane. I once asked the Reaper at a convention about horse painting and they said there was a workshop they sometimes ran, and a tutorial online, but I never found it. Perhaps someone here knows where this resides?

My horses used to be either "brown" or "not-at-all-realistic-looking". I found it useful to pick up an encyclopedic horse breed book, generally aimed at horse enthusiasts, from the markdown racks at the big box bookstore (trust me, there will always be one there, just like there will always be a big book of airplanes). Pick a page at random, and try to make the next horse like that.

I really like the foundry triads as well, and mainly use Bay Brown, Conker Brown, Rawhide, Charcoal Grey (black horses), Quagmire (greys) and Arctic Grey (for white horses).

They have a Chestnut as well, but that always looks a little off to me without a dark brown wash over it to dull it down a little. In 28mm I use all three but, like Swampster, just two (the shade and mid tone) in 15mm.

I find myself using washes quite a bit with horses. Also means I can play around a bit and experiment without having to worry so much about a layer coming out too contrasty.

Thanks swamped, I was on the Foundry website but saw nothing really horses. I will go and double check.

Thanks Jeffreyw3, that must have taken some typing in. I'll check out my Vallejo stash….

But is there a triad for… triads?

plutarch 6404 Mar 2015 8:21 p.m. PST

Foundry had a horse set a couple of years ago which now no longer appears, although all the paint triads are still available individually. The seven I mentioned above were definitely part of the set as that was what got me onto them, but I can't remember what the others may have been (if there were any).

Salt, pepper, ketchup

Swampster05 Mar 2015 12:25 a.m. PST

link is the Foundry triad list.
Bay brown 42
Chestnut 53 (though I think it looks a lot lighter in reality and, as Plutarch says, benefits from a wash.
Palomino 56
I use many others too – tan, buff, canvas, musket, conker, butter fudge…
The painting guide gives some seemingly surprising suggestions like night sky which gives a nice young blue roan or blue dun base.

1815Guy05 Mar 2015 8:06 a.m. PST

Yep, I found them lurking in an "expansion set". Strange they don't have these featured more prominently.

I'm going for the Bay and Chestnut, I already have the Grey and Black triads for other figures. That should do me nicely, thanks everyone.
