Hi,I know lannes and murat hated each others guts! but What about rhe others? greetings serge joe

138SquadronRAF02 Mar 2015 10:50 a.m. PST

Bernadotte hated everyone.

St. Cyr was an introvert and his only real friend seems to have been Desaix.

Marcel180902 Mar 2015 10:54 a.m. PST

If we can believe Marbot, Lannes and Bessières almost came to blows (or duel) during the battle of Aspern Essling, this was just before Lannes got hit by a canonball

MajorB02 Mar 2015 12:07 p.m. PST

Was not the big problem just what Serge Joe is suggesting?

They did not co-operate, they competed. It was a different era then, when one's personal reputation (La Gloire) counted more than the national interest. They would let another Marshall be defeated, rather than come to the rescue, unless it somehow served their own cause.

Friendship certainly was not a factor…..

Maybe that was the kind of personality which did rise to such dizzy heights in a "meritocracy" where, we are told, every grenadier had a baton in his knapsack!

serge joe02 Mar 2015 12:54 p.m. PST

So lannes was the most hot headed one? greetings serge joe

Marcel180902 Mar 2015 1:02 p.m. PST

Masséna was very displeased with both soult and Ney in the peninsular as they did not help him when he asked for support.
Soult and Grouchy were on particular bad terms after Waterloo especially as it was soult who opposed him being re instated (or atleast payed) as a marshal after 1821.
Apparantly maréchal Lefebvre was a good friend of Masséna especially in the early years of the empire.

Excellent suggestion. Maybe our friend SJ will read it …

Perhaps you would be best advised to carry on with your reading first and then ask your questions.

@ VW

I actually own a copy of "England, Their England" but never knew he wrote a book on N.'s marshals.

There you go: any good?

Vintage Wargaming02 Mar 2015 8:06 p.m. PST

Yes a good read – written in the 30s I think

Meiczyslaw02 Mar 2015 8:51 p.m. PST

On a related note, Mark Urban ends up covering French infighting in Spain as one of the things revealed by English code-breaking. See link

And, of course, there is Vandamme who was never made a Marshal, but should have been (and he was pretty miffed about that!) He seemingly didn't get on with any of the others, so much so that Napoleon sent him to serve under Davout initially in 1813 because he knew the latter would stand no nonsense from Vandamme.

The two best comments from the Emperor about Vandamme were that if he invaded Hell he would have Vandamme command the vanguard and that if he had two of him he would have to shoot one of them to stop them falling out with each other.

Vandamme was, however, well liked by the German troops he commanded in 1806/7 and 1809 (Wurtemburgers) and was arguably the only Corps commander in 1813 to perform up to scratch even if if did get him captured and his Corps largely destroyed at Kulm. If Napoleon had had more Vandammes in 1813 . . . . .

If we can believe Marbot, Lannes and Bessières almost came to blows (or duel) during the battle of Aspern Essling, this was just before Lannes got hit by a cannonball.

I'd have definitely had the Gendarmerie d'Elite de la Garde looking into that one.

That is a good list!

The March of the Twenty Six, I no longer have, but recall it fondly. Was it not also by Delderfield?

Murvihill03 Mar 2015 10:58 a.m. PST

Despots traditionally encourage competition among their suboordinates. You can't plot against the king if you're too busy plotting against everyone else.

Despots?

It seems to be a tactic of Prime Ministers & Presidents in contemporary Democracies.

I don't think I would have Bleeped texted Augereau off …. He was a pro Dualist having killed some 40 men .. not Including the 32 wounds he recieved in 20 years of war if I remember correct

OSchmidt03 Mar 2015 2:08 p.m. PST

Despotisms or democracies- doesn't matter. Whoever controls the promotion chain will automatically encourage rivalry and animosity and thereby friction and faction. Remember God? the whole thing with Satan?

As for the marshals, most of them had no talent, no initiative, and no real smarts. A few did but not many. If they did we would be calling the "Lannesian Wars" or the "Augereauic wars." or the "Oudinotian Wars."

ubercommando03 Mar 2015 4:18 p.m. PST

Apparently Mortier got on with most of the other Marshalls. Not having a superego probably helped.

Mortier seems to have been a pleasant and easy going man.
