Greetings All,

My old school Wood Elf army as it stands; probably about half of what it'll end up being. I was inspired by the army done by the Masterworks Guild. Finding the models and putting together units is half the fun. Stripping and tidying old figures and breathing new life into them is also satisfying. The figures are a mix of 80s and 90s models. TBH I just chose what I thought looked the best rather than consult army lists.

The totals are:

3 mounted leaders
2 units of spears (20 each)
1 unit of swords (20)
2 units of archers (30 each)
1 unit of lancers (10)
1 unit of horse archers (10)
5 Zoats
10 Dryads
4 Treemen (inc 'Durthu')
4 Great Eagles (inc 'Lord on Great Eagle' – one of my favourites)

A healthy start to the army. I'll finish it off…one day…

Hope you like the pics.

Mick

Nice. Very impressive collection.

Beautiful paint jobs! I love the look of these figure sculpts. They don't make wood elves like that anymore.

Wow, that's an impressive army and some mighty fine painting!

McWong7301 Mar 2015 6:29 p.m. PST

Absolutely AMAZING!!!

Very, very jealous. May I ask what it cost to get the figures?

You've chosen my favourite fantasy sculpts, always loved the old school GW Wood Elves.

WOW!! well done!

Thanks for the comments!
I saw the Wood Elf army posted by themasterworkguild.blogspot.com and liked it so much I wanted one of my own. Lots of character and charm as noted by you all. It's also a way to experiment with painting styles.

@Terrement – Not sure what the cut off point is – 20 years? Perhaps I should have called them 'classic' rather than old school. Those Tom Meier WE are great too.

@McWong73 – Mate, I'm too scared to add it all up. They go for a premium these days but I managed a few good deals on ebay and some forums. The 'Lord on Great Eagle' can be crazy expensive but I think I got it for US$25.

Wow!

I really like the "Gold Cloak" swordsmen. They just don't make Wood Elves like that anymore.

simply fantastic!!!

Every time I cruise ebay I look for these era figures. Agree they're not cheap!

Excellent work. Your paintwork is lovely and the size of the army/collection is impressive. Personally, I'm always pleased to see classic figs painted and based to a modern style. Really shows how good these sculpts were to begin with.

Agreed – it was something that I was conscious of. When you actually get the figures in your hand you can see the wonderful detail so I tried to bring it out with the paintjobs.
Apart from the cavalry and Zoats, I snipped off the slotta tabs to give more freedom with the basing. More work, but worth the effort.

Fortunately, I'm handy with a Dremel and green stuff so I managed to repair quite a few damaged figures. You would never know how bad they once looked after they are painted.

They don't make them like that anymore. That's true but why? Is there no market? Older lotr orcs too! Why has no one produced minis mirroring the style? I hate the newer stuff especially the green gorillas that pass as orcs.
