Here is my rendition of the Union figures from the Baccus ACW Boxed Set.

These are 6mm figures.

They are setup so that I can use the Polemos rules supplied with the box set and also others like Longstreet or On To Richmond.

What do you think guys?

They look great!

Those are very nice. I've been painting Heroics & Ros ACW to use for the "Alter of Freedom" rules which use the same mounting convention. But I have not made my units not in the 20 mm segments you have been using. I have some Baccus that I haven't painted yet, but they are noticeably larger meaning I'd have to keep them in separate units.

My only question for you is why bronze 10 lb Parrot rifled artillery pieces? Black would be more appropriate.

coopman01 Mar 2015 4:35 p.m. PST

Looks great Jim. Each regiment in POLEMOS is 3 stands?

JimDuncanUK01 Mar 2015 4:42 p.m. PST

@gamertom

Good question from a man from the land of Lincoln.

I googled around for others Baccus ACW guns and by far the majority were bronze so I chose bronze.

It's an easy enough change to black.

Should I?

JimDuncanUK01 Mar 2015 4:49 p.m. PST

@coopman

No.

In the regimental version of Polemos (On They Came) a 60x30 base is a Regiment and has six strips of 4 figures in close order and 4 figures in skirmish order.

The same base in the higher version of Polemos would be a Brigade.

My 20x20 sub-bases have two strips of 4 close order figures and one or two skirmish figures. I group three of them onto a 60x30 base to play Polemos.

I could use up to ten of these same 20x20 sub-bases for a Regiment in Longstreet.

This gives me quite a bit of flexibility.

Clever basing method. Very versatile.

Should I?

I'm sure there are purists out there thinking "Yes. Do as the Stones song and paint it black!" In general rifled guns were made of iron and painted black and smoothbores were brass and left unpainted. There were exceptions, but every Parrott I've seen a picture of has been painted black.

Would I have noticed this if you had not posted a close up picture – most likely not. But I might have asked why no rifled guns in your artillery.

You've done a wonderful job with these figures and have a very clever and versatile mounting arrangement and I would love to be able to game with them (even with bronze Parrotts).

Using the 60 x 30 to surrender some space for a unit label is a nice idea.

JimDuncanUK02 Mar 2015 4:03 a.m. PST

@gamertom

I just checked the Baccus web site and the artillery supplied is described as 'smoothbore' and is painted bronze in their own photographs.

They have a 'rifle' option which is painted black in their photographs but I can't see much of difference in the casting.

I'll possibly get some and eyeball them to be sure.

Another point: brass vs. black makes it easy to identify gun type (for rules where rifles and smoothbores have different ranges or fire factors).

JimDuncanUK02 Mar 2015 7:58 a.m. PST

@Extra Crispy

Thanks for the suggestion.

My artillery bases have a magnetic marker which will indicate smoothbore or rifled and heavy or light.

See my blog picture for 5th Maine: LR light rifle and T trained.

I did but my eyes can't read labels at anything over 6" evil grin They can still spot "gold vs. black" despite #TheDress

I am looking forward to Scale Creep getting more army packages(hear that Mark!); I am looking at the "Altar of Freedom Rules" but have two questions:
1)How many army packs per side should I purchase to do most scenarios?
2) What rules would require the 20mm by 20mm sub base?
Many thanks

The 20x20 sub-bases I have can be used in Longstreet, up to 10 for a full strength regiment.

These same bases could be used with On To Richmond. You would need perhaps 6 for Union regiment and perhaps 8 for a Confederate one.

I could also use them on a sabot for Altar of Freedom.

I plan to order more strips of close order and skirmish order figures (ie no colour parties) from Baccus to allow me to make up a starting brigade for Longstreet. I just haven't worked out how many that will be yet.

Danny Weitz24 Mar 2015 11:05 a.m. PST

It is amazing how well "On To Richmond" has survived the test of time. The one thing I cannot find is a copy of a table that I had on how a unit reacts to the death of a general; from going impetuous to running in fear.

I've just looked through my 'archive' copy of OTR and I can't see a table for the 'death of a general'. Therefore it may not be in the original version but perhaps an additional table authored by persons unknown and not in my collection.

It might be covered in the 'new' 'revised' edition available here:
