My wife and I decided to take a little break from the routine and spent three days in Las Vegas. I'm not a gambler but we took in a couple of shows… Cirque de Soleil's KA was really great, and we went over to The Venetian and for a gondola ride on their canal. To my great surprise and pleasure, I discovered that in the gondola gift shop (Emporio di Gondola) they had resin gondolas that are very compatible with 28mm figures. I couldn't resist getting a few despite the fact that I have no immediate plan for their use. I've included a picture of one of them here with a 28mm couple from the Foundry Victorians. By the way, do you have any suggestions for a figure that would work as a gondolier? The gondolas don't come with gondoliers. May I ask how much they were? It strikes me that they could be great for the fantasy game Carnevale.. plus quite a few other things.. Regards C |

My first thought would be a Victorian sailor figure from a Boxer Rebellion range, because of the Sennett hat.
Add a sash made from putty. The bare arms may be a problem, though. |

Chokidar, the regular shop price for the gondola is $14.95 USD which for things in a gift shop in The Venetian isn't bad, but because my wife and I went there to ride the gondolas we got a 20% discount on anything purchased in the Emporio di Gondola shop. I don't know if they sell things by mail, but if you go there I recommend the gondola ride; you get the discount on the price of the toy gondola and the ride itself is great… $19 USD per person. In fact, try these:
From the Galloping Major, 18th C sailors. They have the neckerchief, but no hat.] TMP linkIt's the short sleeves again that are a problem. Ah! But wait!
Apparently they can be bareheaded too. So I would use those sailors and go with either the bandana head, a bare head, or make my own Sennett hat. |

Thanks John. I'll check it out. Have either you or Chokidar had any experience with the PlastCraft Games Carnevale buildings? And by the way, we got a picture of our gondolier with my wife and me sitting in the boat… memories are made of this! Richard |

Not familiar with the buildings. Sorry. |

Copplestone Castings has the sailors with the Sennett hat. Only a couple would probably effectively modify for the purpose of a gondolier, but the heads could be used on other figures so that pointed me in a good direction. Thanks. Richard |

I have the buildings and I think them great… I am still in the process of assembling them – mission or focus creep! … but I love them and rate them pretty highly. The only problem is that with all the possible permutations you can use on the roof you are looking at one hell of a lot of variants. But I am well pleased. Regards (and thanks for the info) C |

Thanks for the idea, I'm going to scratchbuild some. The commercial one is too short. |

Otto, when you get it done, I hope you will post it. I'd love to see it. Richard |

I believe the Vegas ones are slightly foreshortened as well; I dimly recall hearing something to that effect on TV. Richard, glad you enjoyed your stay – and got something to remember it by! |
