In your world of VBCW is there a role for Winston Churchill, or Louis Mountbattern, or Montgomery, others?

MajorB01 Mar 2015 11:28 a.m. PST

Absolutely! They were alive at the right time so in the event of conflict breaking out they would each be forced to take sides. Or emigrate …

Legbiter01 Mar 2015 11:38 a.m. PST

Churchill was against the King Abdicating, and would have been on the Monarchist side for that reason.

It would be an interesting study to see the "what would happen?" between Churchill and Halifax. Thoughts?

Churchill would use his Tommy Gun. It would be over in seconds… ;-)

lgkmas01 Mar 2015 11:36 p.m. PST

Churchill would be a difficult one. Yes, he was all for the King not abdicating. But he was solidly against Fascism/the Nazis, etc. Though he was also against the Reds.
Were does he go with all that? With the King but against Mosley? I suspect that Mosley being made Prime Minister while not a member of the Commons might strain relationships a bit. Churchill was always about the correct form of Parliamentary business. Plus he might have thought he had a chance there?
Still, it's your VBCW so make up your own mind.

Montgomery was overseas at this stage, as an instructor at Quetta and only ranked as a Colonel. So rather small fry and hardly likely to get too far.

lgkmas01 Mar 2015 11:45 p.m. PST

Mountbatten was a Commander RN at this stage and was 37yo. Again a rather small fry although he was a Personal Naval ADC to the King, so would have had some contact. Not sure what his position was towards Edward.

Supercilius Maximus03 Mar 2015 5:41 a.m. PST

I suspect Mountbatten would have been an Albertine – Dickie had a teenage nephew, Al had teenage daughters.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Churchill did not form a government for the "King" but joined the Anglican cause, but might well serve the Duke when he arrives from Canada. Currently Churchill is part of the intelligence and security unit led by Christopher Foyle Detective Chief Superintendent. Quite a few detective and adventurer types.

Bobgnar,

Very good, I like that a lot.

I now need to track down a couple of those figures – Winston and Hilda. Thanks.

As I recall from the original Very British Civil War sourcebook, in the alternate history of the VBCW Churchill declined to serve as PM (as Bobgnar points out above) after the resignation of Baldwin's government. That is how the scenario designers get to Mosely and the BUFs taking power.

For those who are unfamiliar with it, VBCW is a great system that can generate some very interesting games. If you have any interest in the 1930's, you should take a look at the VBCW books.
