"…the Japanese public is deeply ambivalent about adopting a more muscular foreign policy." Isn't that an oxymoron? I thought that ambivalence is the middle, tending to vacillate between two or more points of view. Ambivalence cannot be "deeply" anything…. |

The Japanese public is unable to make a decision in the matter and it does not appear that this indecision will resolve. Correct usage. |
