link Heh heh. What follows is not a SPOILER, but [pure guesswork. So, is Tyrion really a hidden Targaryean? "You are no son of mine!" Some UNCONFIRMED conspiracy theories on wacko sites on da intwerwebs seem to suggest that. The Mad King Aerys is really Tyrion's dad, being all to "familiar" with Tyrion's Mum Joanna and got jiggy. Pure speculation, but wouldn't it be neat to see Tyrion as a dragon rider? Tango Armand, when the new season starts, please do not ask me how this fits in with the books. It is very obvious that the show has passed the books far behind. It will be interesting to see when the dust settles and the show is finished and the last book is out, which will be considered "canon". I for one believe that R + L = J and A + J = T. "I know what you dream, Bastard." The dragon has three heads. |

Of course the Father of the Year also said "You are no son of mine" to Jaime, which complicates things a bit more. There are theories to cover this too. link This is for those who are looking for excuses to not do things you really need to do. "But Sam's mother's name is REALLY important!" |

My guess is that the HBO show will become canon since there seems to be very little chance of Martin actually finishing the series. David splinteredlightminis.com |

I'm not that surprised they have moved beyond the books, a lot of the later books seem to consist of creating new characters, giving them lavish backstories and then killing them…..while the remaining 'main' characters are pretty much in a long, long, holding pattern. I always thought John Snow and the Dragon lady would end up together in the end…..then a new war of succession. |

I agree with Splintered Light (David). At the rate that new books are coming out the HBO series will conclude years before Martin finishes the books. And I also agree with Earl of the North, the last two books had tons of filler that wound up going nowhere. Actual plot devices that moved the story along could have easily been reduced to one book. I have no proof of this theory but I suspect that Martin himself really doesn't have an ending. No ending means that he is feeling his way just like the rest of us. Either that or he's either not satisfied with his ending or fearful (or at least concerned) of how that ending will be received. BTW, the "you're no son of mine" phrase seems to be a Tywin Lannister favorite. Maybe he isn't (or wasn't) who everyone thought him to be. Or perhaps Jaime and Cersei are actually Kevan's kids. |

I also wouldn't be surprised if Martin doesn't have an ending, or even any plans for a ending and just plans to continue for as long as he lives. The story all seems to be set up with the undead threatening to sweep south, the north all but undefended, unending civil war leeching the power needed to stop the threatened invasion away, a queen in waiting ready to sail to the rescue……..and here is another book when nothing much important happens and loads of people you just met (plus a few of the regular characters you may have liked) die. On the Tywin thing, if Tyrion wasn't his i'd be very surprised that he survived to adulthood, Tywin main driving force was seeing HIS descendents in power. |

Given that Martin at one point finished what was basically two books at once (3 & 4, I believe, but can't be bothered to look it up), and yet took years to release the second of the two has ALWAYS worried me. At this point, I trust the screenwriters to do a better job with it anyway, so don't really care. As I have stated before, most all of my favorite scenes were very much NOT in the books. Still, you have to wonder if Martin has taken notice that Harper Lee nested on a sequel for fifty-plus years… |

I think that the simple fact is, and I hate to say this as a reader, that the HBO series has become much more important than the books. The audience for the show+videos is larger than the number of books sold. It's one of the reasons why they can't delay it, or don't want to delay it, ala The Sopranos. The revenue stream derives from HBO. Halloween costumes, collectible figures, t-shirts and collectibles stem from the series, not the books. Now I don't know how his deal is structured but I'll bet that Martin makes a lot more from HBO and company than from his publisher. So there is the HBO series that Martin is involved with, so he still has some control over his characters. It even gives him the freedom to go back and correct paths and characters he developed that he doesn't care for anymore. So I think that there is every reason in the world for Martin to put the books on the back-burner, or maybe even take them completely off the stove. As I said as a reader I hate it but by the same token I can't really blame him. Maybe as the series passes the books we'll get novelized versions of the seasons and the whole thing will resolve itself that way. BTW, John the OFM thanks for posting that link to all the conspiracy theories. I can't say that I agree with all of them, or even most. And Martin has specifically repudiated at least one, but still they are fun to read. As for me reading GoT last year lead me to re-read Mary Stewart's Merlin/Arthur books. (The old fashioned way, Paperbacks! That I bought back in the 1970s when paperbacks were 2.99 <USD> each!)And I re-read "Once and Future King", still one of my favorite books ever. And my small game group and I dusted off "Pendragon" and we're even looking at "Melee, The Fantasy Trip"! |

As soon as the books are published, 90% of the theories go up in smoke. Which will not be for a long time. |
jowady | 28 Feb 2015 11:31 p.m. PST |
Martin is quite good at managing the various theories. When he says that some are true then the discussion becomes which are true. He drops just enough specific info that the discussion moves along. And he seems to read the various discussion forums as well. |

That theory site makes me wonder if a Game of Thrones role playing game should have a die roll to determine if you are a secret Targaryean. Anybody can be one! If not a Targ maybe you can be one of Robert's bastards, a much higher probability, particularly if you have dark hair. |

Here. Have some truly wacky theories. link SOME might say that "wacky" and "Huffington Post" go together like bacon and eggs, but I will not. However, I will say that Aunt Genna is my second favorite Lannister, but I fear she will be confined to the books. |

John/Winston, I think that your rule need to be expanded a little, after all you can also have an are you a Baratheon or are you a Lannister" or even an "are you a Stark". Maybe you develop your character but the Game Master also rolls up your character and only he knows the truth. Maybe he reveals it and maybe he doesn't. Maybe you are who you think that you are and maybe you aren't. And others don't necessarily know the truth either. It would either be one of the best RPGs ever or one of the worst. |

As apparently is paternity, Mama's baby, Poppa's maybe. Somehow I think that Martin is laughing it up reading all these bizarre theories, occasionally thinking "now why didn't I think of that?". And the next book/season gets a plot twist. |
