I have been experimenting with my basing for my 28mm ECW collection.

The first shot is the regiment marching:

the next shot depicts them in 'ready to receive' – note the two extra bases at the front changing the feel of regiment. Each of my foot regiments have these extra bases to depict when the unit is in battle.

last shot is a close up….

I now have 8 of these foot regiments to base up……they will be used with the Victory Without Quarter rules.
thanks for looking

Looks really good, Corp.! You could paint up a couple more standard bearers on round bases to go in front. We might need a bigger table…

thanks Simon

yes I plan to add some square bases with standards – to give more 'flutter' appeal and so I can change the unit loyalty making them more flexible for game use …

lovely stuff!!

That's a great idea with the extra bases, totally changes the look of the unit.

thanks guys – yes so my idea was to depict the difference between a foot regiment 'in contact' vs 'marching/advancing to contact'. Practically the extra long front bases depicting charge of pike actually act to protect the pikes as well!

Winston0126 Feb 2015 7:42 p.m. PST

Really great look what are you using for the pikes?

Won't the extra deep base cause problems in game play – when two unit clash that's adding about another 6" depth to a unit?

I recommend buying the Caliver ECW flags book – it's excellent.

Pikes are steel pikes from various manufacturers.

Time the basing issue might actually replicate regiment action in battle as pikes would probably engage one another in a push off and the musketeers would hang about on the periphery exchanging shots and engaging in skirmish type melee's when the opportunity arose….
