Ares Games announced that they'll be launching a Kickstarter in a couple weeks to bring giant bomber miniatures to their WWI Wings of Glory range. They'll be looking to bring the Staaken and Handley-Page planes to the skies over your gaming tables, starting on March 10th.

Oooh Handley Page, my late father's cousin was the gunner in the front of one of these and he survived the war! |

I've often wondered how WW1 bombers in a game would work, do they just trundle slowly in a straight line, with enemy fighter buzzing round them? I want to include a coupla 1/72 Gothas i got cheap off E-Bay, but, just dont see how to work them into an entertaining game? how do the major WW1 rule sets do it? John |

I would assume that this is pretty much correct. You probably have an objective for the bombers to bomb, AA defence at the target and interceptors – not unlike WWIi… ""I've often wondered how WW1 bombers in a game would work, do they just trundle slowly in a straight line, with enemy fighter buzzing round them? The bombers do have a maneuver deck like other planes. They may "trundle" but it isn't always in a straight line. We have done a lot of bomber scenarios and generally add an escort or two that makes life more interesting for the interceptors. Maybe they are 2-sweaters on an "in-bound scenario and some single seaters coming in for relief as the bombers try to make it home. |

By way of turnaround and twist, the bombers can be Breguet XIVs, and their "fighter" escort(s) Caudron R-11 three-seater twin engine "gunships." The R-11 was as fast in level flight as more than a few single engine single seaters in 1918, was ruggedly built, and could mount up to five (5) guns including a ventral gun to discourage attacks from below and behind. When the Aviation Militaire discovered that the new R-11 wasn't suitable for its original intended role as a bomber, they found that without a bomb load the plane was very suitable for recon. As it turned out, the French crews that received the R-11s were formerly operating the earlier Caudron R-4 twin engine three seater, and had been doing so with a high degree of aggressiveness, building up a reputation for deliberately hunting German aircraft when performing recon missions(!). So when the new R-11s showed up, pairing them with Breguet XIV escadrilles was as automatic as crepes and coffee… Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net
