The Rules don't mention base size, but recoil is one base width.

Not as long as both sides are consistent. Big creatures should be on bigger bases of course.

No, it doesn't matter. Bigger bases allow for faster movement (because you leapfrog the stick), but also allow more foes to gang up in melee. So there's a pay off. You pays your money and you makes your choice.
